Buendía brings together the rock art and waterside landscape of the Embalse de Buendía with a varied local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Buendía, this distinction can help with planning your trip: would you mainly like to explore the trails, or are you more interested in collections, architectural history and the annual Romería?

Rock Art and Trails at the Embalse de Buendía

The Ruta de las Caras de Buendía is an artistic trail set in nature beside the Embalse de Buendía. Monumental sculptures and bas-reliefs are carved directly into the sandstone. The rock faces bear the art, while the landscape provides the setting: the reservoir is framed by steep cliffs, riverside woodlands and open horizons that change with the light.

From Buendía, a fully paved road leads to a car park at the start of the trail. From there, an easy circular walk of just over two kilometres follows. Access information may change temporarily; check local information before setting out.

For a longer hike, the PR-CU46 offers a different route: it passes through the Ruta de las Caras and covers 14.5 kilometres across the reservoir peninsula. Compared with the circular walk of just over two kilometres, this is a considerably longer distance. If you plan to walk the PR-CU46, check the route information locally.

Non-motorised activities such as kayaking and canoeing are possible in designated areas of the reservoir. Before taking part, check which areas are authorised for these activities. This helps distinguish the rock art and hiking trails from water-based activities, rather than planning both as the same kind of outing.

Pharmacy History and Collections

La Botica preserves the pharmacy’s dispensary in Buendía, dating from the mid-19th century, almost unchanged. This preserved pharmacy room contains around 400 ceramic jars. Their number lends a tangible detail to the historic interior, while its almost unchanged condition brings the preserved appearance of the dispensary into focus.

The Museo del Carro de Buendía is housed in the historic Casa Tercia, a 16th-century building. Its exhibition includes more than a dozen traditional carts and carriages from different uses and periods. Compared with the single historic pharmacy dispensary, the collection offers a broader look at different types of vehicles and their range of periods.

Architectural History and Religious Tradition

The architecture also reflects different centuries. Buendía’s historic town wall was built in the 15th century and had five gates; sections of the wall remain. Casa Tercia dates from the 16th century, while the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is an 18th-century church with a Herrerian-style façade. Together, these buildings provide a guide to different periods of local history.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados is located eleven kilometres from Buendía. It can only be reached on foot via an unpaved path; access is open and free of charge. As access conditions may be affected by local circumstances, check them before your visit.

An annual Romería is associated with the Ermita: on the second Saturday in May, the image of the Virgen is carried from the Ermita to the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Buendía. The specific proceedings may vary from year to year. The date is therefore a helpful point of reference when planning your trip if you would like to experience this tradition.
