Pistoia: Art, History and Landscapes
Accommodation in Pistoia
Pistoia Cathedral preserves a silver altar regarded as one of the most important works of Italian and European Gothic goldsmithing. A relic of Saint James is also kept here. Pistoia’s culture can also be explored through its frescoes, modern art, and archaeological remains.
Art and History in the City
At the Chiesa di San Jacopo in Castellare, frescoes tell the story of the development of local painting: they trace its evolution from the 13th to the late 14th century. The Museo del Novecento e del Contemporaneo di Palazzo Fabroni offers a different perspective. It displays the city’s permanent collection of modern and contemporary art and hosts temporary exhibitions. Fondazione Pistoia Musei operates four museum sites in Pistoia’s historic center. A cultural stay therefore brings together religious art, the history of local painting, and more recent art.
A guided archaeological tour with Pistoia Sotterranea leads beneath the city and explores the historic use of water. The route beneath the hospital covers about 650 meters. Stops include a Roman bridge, medieval washing areas, an ancient city gate, and two mills; the oldest dates back to the 12th century. As access arrangements may change, check the visiting conditions in advance.
The Province: Protected Areas and Regional History
There are fifteen protected areas in the Province of Pistoia. Their varied landscapes encompass different habitats and a rich diversity of animal and plant life. Padule di Fucecchio is designated as a wetland worthy of protection under the Ramsar Convention. The WWF-affiliated Oasi Dynamo Nature Reserve covers more than 1,000 hectares of the Pistoia Apennines and reaches an altitude of 1,100 meters. These examples illustrate the region’s varied natural landscapes: a designated wetland and an extensive reserve in the Apennines.
The province’s history can also be explored in specific places. The Museo Ferrucciano di Gavinana commemorates Francesco Ferrucci and the historic Battle of Gavinana in 1530. Five pilgrimage routes intersect in Pistoia and the Montagna Pistoiese, connecting history, tradition, and unspoiled landscapes. The nine-kilometer Ecomuseo trekking route, Sentiero della Ghiacciaia, leads from the Ghiacciaia della Madonnina to the Giardino dell’Energia Rinnovabile in Pontepetri.
On the Move: Cycling Routes, Rail, and Ski Area
For a mountain bike loop in Pistoia, the starting point is near the city center at Piazza Oplà. From there, the route climbs toward Germinaia and Iano, offering panoramic views of the city. Another loop starting from Sammommè passes through parts of the Montagna Pistoiese, with its chestnut and beech forests. One combines the climb with views of the city; the other passes through the forested areas of the Montagna Pistoiese. Check current trail conditions before setting off.
The still-operating Ferrovia Porrettana runs daily between Pistoia and Porretta; the timetable for your travel date determines the specific connection. The seasonal Porrettana Express is a separate service: historic trains with vintage carriages operate in the Province of Pistoia, with workshops, excursions, and guided tours. Check the program dates before traveling. In the Montagna Pistoiese, necci are a local culinary specialty: thin chestnut-flour flatbreads are traditionally rolled into a cannolo shape and filled with ricotta.
The Doganaccia ski area also offers a clear point of comparison for planning: a cable car runs there from Cutigliano, and the ride takes eight minutes. The area has about 15 kilometers of pistes, three of which are lit for night skiing. Check the cable car service and ski area operating conditions in advance.
Choose the Right Base for Your Trip
Compare a hotel’s location with the specific places on your itinerary. Train timetables, seasonal train schedules, cable car service, and trail conditions all need to be considered when planning each activity.
