Limestre can be understood through a clear historical sequence: the work of Metallurgica Italiana (SMI) was followed by a workers’ quarter and, finally, a church. For art and nature activities, other questions take precedence: Can you visit only as part of a guided tour? What advance booking is required, and when do the tours take place?

The Development of the Upper Valley

The upper Limestre valley remained largely uninhabited until SMI first built a new factory there. A workers’ quarter and, finally, a church followed. This sequence makes the valley’s individual stages of development clear: industrial settlement, residential quarter, and church construction.

On 16 February 1957, Bishop Longo Dorni established the new parish of Limestre by decree. It was assigned the church of Madonna della Neve (SS. Maria ad Nives), built by SMI. The church and the parish should be understood as two distinct historical steps: SMI built the church; the decree established the parish and assigned the church to it.

Art, Architecture, and Visiting Requirements

OCA Oasy Contemporary Art and Architecture, in the heart of the Appennino Pistoiese within the Oasi Dynamo nature reserve, offers an immersive route featuring works by contemporary artists and architects. One specific example is the Dynamo Pavillion by Kengo Kuma: its design is defined by steel and carbon-fiber structures winding between the trees.

A visit to OCA begins at the Croce di Piteglio car park, followed by a walk of about 30 minutes. The approach is rated moderate and has an elevation gain of 250 metres. This gives you the starting point, approximate walking time, difficulty level, and elevation gain to plan with. Take all of these details into account when adding the visit to your day’s itinerary.

OCA’s forest art trail has its own access requirements: it can only be visited as part of a guided tour, which must be booked 48 hours in advance. Tours take place at 10:00 and 15:00. Plan accordingly, taking these times and the advance-booking requirement into account.

In 2026, the temporary exhibition “I’m a gardener” by Arne Quinze and the installations in the permanent collection can be visited from 25 April to 1 November. If you are planning a visit during this period, check the dates before your trip.

Visits and Activities at Oasi Dynamo

Visits to Oasi Dynamo take place exclusively as guided tours, according to an annual programme and with advance reservations. The visitor centre offers educational activities for schools and families, open-air concerts, art exhibitions, and a range of activities for the body and mind. The programme therefore includes educational and cultural offerings as well as activities focused on the body and mind.

Visiting requirements differ: for OCA’s forest art trail, the tour times and booking 48 hours in advance are key; visits to Oasi Dynamo follow an annual programme and require an advance reservation. Before your trip, check the relevant dates and reservation information so you don’t plan both offerings around the same time requirements.
