Pescia can be explored through a variety of themes: the historic townscape along the river, paper-making in Pietrabuona, Pinocchio sites in Collodi and signposted routes. Art, gardens and a patron saint celebrated each year also offer specific starting points for planning your trip.

The History of the Town Along the River Pescia

The River Pescia divides the historic townscape into a religious district and a civic district. The cathedral defines the religious area, while the town hall marks the civic one. The Duomo di Pescia took its present form after being completely rebuilt in 1684. The Gipsoteca Libero Andreotti is housed in the Palagio. The building was once the seat of the PodestĂ ; its original core dates back to the 13th century.

The Palio degli Arcieri is also part of the town’s annual calendar: it takes place every year on September 1 in honour of the patron saint of the town, Santa Dorotea. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the information for the relevant date.

Paper, Illustration and Art

The Museo della Carta di Pescia is located in Pietrabuona, in the 18th-century Cartiera Le Carte. It introduces visitors to the process of making paper from rags. The visit includes the Cartiera Le Carte and the Sala Filigrane of the Archivio Storico Magnani. This offers a way to explore the history of paper both through the historic site and the areas included in the visit.

Another cultural focus is illustration for children. The Laboratorio delle Parole e delle Figure holds exhibitions and educational workshops on the subject. Pescia’s art history is also represented by the Gipsoteca in the former Palagio, where the building’s current use as a museum meets its former civic role.

Pinocchio Sites in Collodi

The Parco di Pinocchio in Collodi, Pescia, is designed as a themed children’s park. A fairytale walk combines art and nature. In the Paese dei Balocchi area, 21 bronze sculptures by Pietro Consagra depict characters, situations and settings from the fairytale. The Percorso Monumentale is considered Italy’s first art park; the Museo Interattivo di Pinocchio features games inspired by the puppet’s adventures.

The other attractions also explore different aspects of the theme. The Laboratorio delle Parole e delle Figure focuses on illustration, while the two adventure trails for younger visitors include suspension bridges, balance sections, logs, planks and a zip line over the river. The Casa delle Farfalle in Collodi is a covered tropical garden. Hundreds of butterflies from equatorial and tropical regions fly freely among plants, flowers and fruit.

Routes for Different Interests

The signposted trails vary by activity. In Pescia, the Sentiero della Bonifica Lungo Pescia is listed as an easy mountain biking route. The Sentiero Valleriana 49A is designated there as an easy trekking route. In Pietrabuona, the Sentiero Valleriana 55 is also classed as an easy trekking route. These descriptions help distinguish the different types of route without implying that they share the same walking time.

Another hike connects the ten Castella in the Svizzera Pesciatina. It starts in Pietrabuona, follows the River Pescia and takes about six hours. This gives you an approximate timeframe to plan for the tour. The Via della Fiaba circular route starts and ends in the centre of Pescia. It follows a medieval road connecting Pescia and Collodi.

Gardens and Citrus Fruit

The garden of Villa Garzoni is laid out in terraces along a central axis of symmetry. Paths lead to a bamboo grove and a maze. The garden’s design can therefore be appreciated not only through its terraces, but also through the destinations along its paths.

At the Giardino degli Agrumi di Pescia, visitors can sample citrus marmalades. A business representative accompanies them during the visit. This adds a specific culinary aspect to the historic, artistic and landscape-related themes.
