Pracchia: Reno Valley and railway history
Accommodation in Pracchia
Pracchia brings together the history of the Porrettana and its location in the deep Reno Valley. It also offers two distinct trail connections: the Pracchia–Orsigna route reaches the historic Molino di Giamba watermill, and the Sentiero delle Stazioni hike begins in Pracchia and ends in Piteccio. These provide specific points of reference for choosing where to stay, covering railway heritage, landscape and trails.
Pracchia between the valley and the railway
Pracchia lies in a narrow, deep valley through which the Reno flows. The former FAP railway station building stands on a spacious square between the Reno’s right bank and the state railway station, which serves the nearby Porrettana line. Both the valley and river setting and this precisely located station area can therefore help you get your bearings in the town.
Porrettana and FAP: two distinct chapters
Pracchia’s history and development are closely linked to the construction of the Porrettana, the first railway to cross the Apennines. The line is still active, with trains running daily between Pistoia and Porretta. The Ferrovia Alto Pistoiese (FAP), which ran from Pracchia, is a separate matter: it remained in operation until 30 September 1965, after which it was closed and the track dismantled. The Porrettana is thus the current rail connection, while the FAP is a historic chapter that has come to an end. If you are arriving by train, check the timetable before your trip.
Church of S. Lorenzo a Pracchia
The church of S. Lorenzo a Pracchia adds a distinct religious connection to the railway history. In 1687, it was elevated from an oratory to a parish church. The date marks the change in its ecclesiastical status. Two distinct lines of development therefore help frame the town’s history: the changes associated with the construction of the Porrettana and the history of the parish church.
Two routes, two points of reference
After about one kilometre, the Pracchia–Orsigna route reaches the historic Molino di Giamba watermill. This provides a specific landmark along the route. The Sentiero delle Stazioni hike begins in Pracchia and ends in Piteccio; it is a train-trekking route. The differences help with planning: on the Pracchia–Orsigna route, the mill reached after about one kilometre is the point of reference; on the Sentiero, the starting point in Pracchia and destination of Piteccio define the route. This lets you choose between a route with a historic building along the way and a hike between named places, depending on which matters more to you.
Trip planning and finding a hotel
The starting point of the Sentiero delle Stazioni is accessible by train from Pistoia station. The train is also a practical consideration when planning your journey to this trail; check the timetable before travelling. Then choose a hotel based on the specific details of each offer.
