Sacred Art and Religious History

The historic center of Borgo a Buggiano is rich in historical and artistic monuments. To help plan your trip, you can choose from several themes: sacred objects, church architecture, individual works of art and the history of religious institutions. There are also two routes with different features. You can tailor your stay to whether you want to focus on culture or follow a specific route.

The Museo Parrocchiale del Santissimo Crocifisso opened in 1982. It displays sacred furnishings, liturgical objects and vestments from the 15th to the 19th century. The collection brings together different forms of church furnishings from several centuries. Visits to the museum must be arranged in advance. If you plan to visit, make arrangements before your trip.

The Chiesa di Santa Marta is a single-nave church with a Baroque appearance and rich stucco decoration. The single nave describes its layout, while the stucco is part of its decorative design. Since 1924, the church has served as a memorial chapel for those who died in the war. It also houses a depiction of the Assumption of the Virgin by Alessandro Bardelli. Santa Marta thus brings together architectural design, remembrance and a specifically named work of art.

The Oratorio del Giglio is located close to the historic center of Borgo a Buggiano. It houses a fresco of the Madonna della Neve from the school of Giotto; a fresco is a wall painting. The Oratorio is believed to date from the second half of the 16th century. The Convento di Santa Maria in Selva offers a different historical perspective: it was founded in 1272 and has been run by Augustinian friars since its foundation.

When choosing a cultural theme, it helps to distinguish between a collection and individual works: the museum focuses on objects from the 15th to the 19th century, while Santa Marta and the Oratorio each offer a specifically named work of art. The convent complements these artistic connections with the history of a religious institution.

Two Routes Compared

The easy cycling and walking route La Pineta lungo il Torrente Cessana runs south of the railway line between Borgo a Buggiano and Chiesina Uzzanese. The Sentiero n°5 – Via dei Borghi descends to Borgo a Buggiano, reaching the wash houses, and then continues towards Buggiano Castello. The routes differ in their defining features: La Pineta is explicitly classified as easy, while the wash houses and the continuation towards Buggiano Castello provide landmarks for the Sentiero.

Fiera in Selva

At Fiera in Selva, plants, flowers and fruit trees of various kinds are displayed on the lawn of the church of Santa Maria in Selva. Most stalls prepare food fresh, and Croccanti are also available. The fair thus combines a plant exhibition with a range of food offerings. If you plan to include Fiera in Selva in your trip, check the specific event dates before travelling.
