Montecatini Terme: Thermal Architecture, Art and World Heritage
Accommodation in Montecatini Terme
Montecatini Terme combines a strong connection to thermal architecture with sacred collections, contemporary art and a UNESCO World Heritage context. Its historic buildings, artworks and local connections offer different perspectives; together, they show that the town cannot be reduced to a single era.
World Heritage and Spa Architecture
Montecatini Terme is part of the transnational serial World Heritage site Great Spa Towns of Europe. Its serial nature places the town within a group of several spa towns. A key landmark of local thermal architecture is the Terme Tamerici complex: it is one of the places that best preserves the Art Nouveau character of Montecatini’s thermal architecture.
The Fontana delle Naiadi is located in the garden of Terme Tamerici. It consists of bronze naiads on travertine pedestals and is a miniature version of the fountain in Piazza Esedra in Rome. The figures, materials and connection to this Roman fountain give the work a distinct profile within the town’s art and architecture.
The Palazzina Regia offers a different perspective on architectural history. Paoletti designed it in 1777; it was completed in 1782 for the grand ducal family’s summer residence. The building features Belle Époque interiors, furnishings and decorations. This places the focus on the design and completion as well as the interior decor.
Sacred Art and Exhibitions
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Montecatini Terme was declared a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1988. In Montecatini Alto, the Museo di Arte Sacra houses a permanent nativity scene and liturgical objects. Its collection also includes a reliquary of Saint Barbara made of repoussé silver. A Florentine workshop created it in the first half of the 15th century. Its material, technique, dedication and date make it a specific example of the history of sacred craftsmanship.
Mo.C.A. – Montecatini Terme Contemporary Art offers a different artistic perspective: since 2012, it has been an exhibition venue for contemporary art. Historic sacred objects and current art exhibitions thus stand side by side as distinct cultural highlights.
Montecatini Alto and Nature
The two red funicular cars travel up and down between Montecatini Terme and the original hilltop town of Montecatini Alto. If you plan to take the ride, check operating conditions in advance. This makes the connection a practical point to consider when planning, without implying a fixed visiting time.
The Grotta Maona offers a natural contrast to the town’s architecture and art: it is a natural cave with two shafts, 20 metres deep and 200 metres long. A 3.60-metre-tall sculpture made of shaped steel by Fabio De Poli is also located on Viale Verdi. These figures represent very different scales—from the dimensions of a cave to the height of a single artwork.
