For travel planning, Lizzanello offers two distinct focal points: a named hiking route and several religious, architectural, and historical points of interest. When choosing the town as a destination, you can decide whether to focus more on time on a forest trail, local history, or both. The hiking route can be considered in terms of length and course; the buildings highlight different periods, religious institutions, and historical memories.

Hiking in Lizzanello

The Lizzanello hiking route starts on Via di Lizzanello in the Borgo di San Felice area and is 2.6 km long. It is suitable for trekking and easy walks. The route runs mostly through woodland, with only a short section on a paved road. The described route therefore includes both stretches through the woods and a section of pavement.

The route description dates from 2022. Check the current condition of the route before setting out, as trail conditions may change.

Churches and local history

The Oratorio di Santa Maria Maddalena is a subsidiary church; Lizzanello developed around it. This connection gives the church a place in local history that goes beyond its classification as a church. Lizzanello is also known for buildings dating from the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries.

One specific example of the town’s architectural history is the 15th-century oratory beside Pietro Becarelli’s house. It faces south and therefore belongs to the oldest of the three centuries mentioned in connection with Lizzanello. A plaque beside the church commemorates Pietro Becarelli as one of the “Mille” and as a hero of Italian unification.

The Orthodox Theological Faculty of San Gregorio Magno is based at the monastery in San Felice, Pistoia, at Via di Lizzanello 1. It offers courses, seminars, and study programs for people who want to deepen their knowledge of the Orthodox faith. Don Livi founded the Monastery of San Serafino di Sarov in Lizzanello.

Memorials and buildings in the surrounding area

A local route description from 2022 mentions the “Albero di Elisa,” dedicated by her grandparents to a young girl, and a wooden bench in front of the tree. At the Bozzo della Salamandra, it describes stones stacked on top of one another and left by passersby as a keepsake. The two features represent different ways of remembering: a personal dedication and traces left behind.

The Ponte del Picchio, a stone bridge with two arches dating from the late 18th century, is located in the area around Lizzanello. Its form and age add another kind of historic architecture to the religious buildings. Lizzanello thus offers several perspectives for planning your trip: the hiking route, the history of the churches and monasteries, and individual memorials and buildings.
