Lüchow-Dannenberg: Crafts, History and Nature
Accommodation in Lüchow-Dannenberg
An open-air museum on a farmstead, reconstructed longhouses and a large, contiguous mixed-forest area give Lüchow-Dannenberg its varied character. There are also museums covering topics from early urban history to the more recent history of the Wendland, as well as the annual Kulturelle Landpartie. Plan your stay around your own interests: cultural history, nature experiences, or both.
Experience crafts and archaeology
At the Rundlingsmuseum Wendland, a farmstead in the Rundling village of Lübeln serves as an open-air museum. Traditional crafts are brought to life in the pottery, blacksmith’s workshop, bakehouse and wheelwright’s workshop. These four areas make the subject tangible through specific activities and places, offering a distinctive way to experience Wendland culture.
The Archaeological Centre Hitzacker is also an open-air museum. It is located on a site that people were already using around 4,000 years ago. Three reconstructed longhouses and numerous interactive stations give visitors a glimpse into the daily lives of early people. For cyclists, the centre offers lockable bicycle boxes, luggage storage and an e-bike charging station. Check these visitor facilities again before you set off.
The Göhrde and nature experiences
The Göhrde is the largest contiguous mixed-forest area in northern Germany. With its many protected areas, the Göhrde Forest provides a habitat for numerous rare and endangered species. Nature and landscape are a travel attraction in their own right, alongside the museums.
The Naturum Göhrde offers forest experiences and guided forest tours on various topics by request. If you would like to plan such a tour, enquire with the Naturum about what is available.
The border and nature trail from Schnackenburg to Gartow also combines landscape with information: ten information panels explain habitats and the area’s flora and fauna, while two viewing platforms offer an unobstructed view of the surroundings. The panels complement the views from the platforms with information about habitats and species.
Kulturelle Landpartie and cycling tours
Since 1989, artists and craftspeople have opened the gates to their farmsteads and studios every year between Ascension Day and Pentecost as part of the Kulturelle Landpartie. For twelve days, they present their work there. The exact dates vary from year to year, so check the dates for the relevant edition when planning your trip.
During the Kulturelle Landpartie, visitors can follow suggested cycling tours to reach numerous exhibitions and theatre performances directly. Since the tours and event programme also vary from year to year, the best way to plan your route is to consult the details for the relevant edition.
Walks and museums in Dannenberg and Wustrow
At Lake Thielenburg, near the centre of Dannenberg, visitors can enjoy long walks at any time of year. Those interested in exhibitions can visit the Waldemarturm in Dannenberg, where several floors feature artefacts and exhibits from the town’s early history, changing art exhibitions and a permanent exhibition on flooding.
The Wustrow Museum is housed in a stately residence built in the late 19th century for merchant Wilhelm Lüring. Its changing exhibitions explore the more recent history of the Wendland, as well as social, political and economic history. While the Waldemarturm brings together a variety of exhibition formats and early urban history, Wustrow focuses on the region’s more recent history and its social issues.
When choosing a hotel location, it helps to first decide what you most want to see, such as archaeological and cultural history attractions, the Göhrde, walks or the Kulturelle Landpartie. Search for a hotel based on the places you specifically plan to visit.
