If you are considering Lüchow as a destination for a stay, you can plan around specific interests: the town combines half-timbered houses, history, church architecture, music-related themes and an annual town festival. The Jeetzel River and Amtsgarten also add a scenic dimension to the townscape.

Townscape and orientation

The Jeetzel River flows through the half-timbered town of Lüchow. The Amtsturm Museum is spread across two buildings less than 50 metres apart; the newer building also houses the Lüchow Tourist Information Office. The museum documents the town’s history of more than 1,000 years—from the beginnings of Slavic settlement through the Middle Ages to the great fire of 1811. Its historical scope therefore stretches from early settlement to a defining event in the town’s history.

Museums, music and architecture

The Stones Fan Museum displays exhibits about the Rolling Stones and their former band members across around 1,000 square metres. Another connection to the band can be found on Gartenstraße: a 34-metre-long mural there depicts important milestones in their history. It was created in 2012 for the Rolling Stones’ 50th anniversary. The museum and mural explore the same musical theme in different ways—with exhibits on the one hand and an artistic depiction in the townscape on the other.

The two noteworthy churches also offer different historical and architectural points of interest. St. Johannis Church is the older of the two buildings and is a Gothic brick structure. Its west side features a stepped gable with plaster panels. St. Agnes Church was built in 1913/1914. Those interested in architecture can compare an older church with specific Gothic features to a church with a precisely dated construction period.

Green spaces in town and the town festival

A rare handkerchief tree stands in Amtsgarten, usually in full bloom in May and a popular subject for photographs. On the market square, a fountain depicts two linen weavers in a historical scene. The two places offer contrasting highlights: the tree is a seasonal attraction, while the fountain brings a historical depiction into the townscape.

The Lüchow Town Festival traditionally takes place every year on the third Saturday in August and offers a family programme in the town centre. If you would like to plan your stay around this date, it is worth checking that year’s programme.

More ways to explore Lüchow-Dannenberg

The Lüchow-Dannenberg destination also offers distinctive cultural themes. In the Rundling village of Lübeln, the Wendland Rundling Museum presents a farmstead as an open-air museum. Traditional crafts are brought to life there in the pottery, forge, bakehouse and wheelwright’s workshop. This rural farmstead complements Lüchow’s urban museum and architecture themes with a different perspective on craftsmanship.

Another regional highlight is the Göhrde, the largest continuous mixed forest area in northern Germany. With its many protected areas, the Göhrde forest provides a habitat for numerous rare and endangered species. At Naturum Göhrde, forest experience programmes and guided forest walks on various topics are offered on request. As these activities require advance enquiry and may change, it is advisable to check beforehand.

The Kulturelle Landpartie is another reason to include Lüchow-Dannenberg in your travel plans. Since 1989, artists and craftspeople have opened their farm gates and studios every year between Ascension Day and Pentecost, presenting their work for twelve days. Exact dates vary from year to year. During the event, visitors can follow suggested cycling routes to reach numerous exhibitions and theatre performances.
