Clenze – Local History and the Clenzer Schweiz
Accommodation in Clenze
Clenze brings together local history and the landscape known as the “Clenzer Schweiz,” offering a range of themes for a stay. If you’re looking for a hotel in Clenze, the town center and surrounding area provide plenty to explore: historical traces, a museum and named routes. When choosing a hotel, consider whether you’d prefer to focus on local history or the landscape.
Rolling countryside and named routes
The hilly landscape around Clenze, with its winding road, is known as the “Clenzer Schweiz.” Geologically, it is an old moraine landscape. It formed during the penultimate major advance of the Scandinavian ice sheets, between 350,000 and 130,000 years ago. Near Clenze, you’ll also find the Clenzer Schweiz erratic boulder park, with a forest nature trail and a nature discovery area for children.
For comparing routes, distances and starting points are useful: the 19.5-kilometer Clenzer Schweiz Trail starts in town; the 37-kilometer Clenzer Schweiz Tour is a cycling route that starts and ends in Clenze. The cycling route is not signposted. Before setting out on the Clenzer Schweiz Trail, check trail conditions and signage; when planning the cycling tour, take its lack of signage into account.
Local history among the castle, church and half-timbered houses
More than a thousand years ago, a Slavic castle stood on the church hill in the center of Clenze. Its remains were identified through excavations. Another historical landmark is St. Bartholomew’s Church in Clenze: it was rebuilt as a Neo-Gothic hall church and consecrated in 1856. The townscape today is largely shaped by half-timbered houses dating from the late 18th and 19th centuries.
Discover the Blue House
The “Blue House” museum displays a model of Clenze’s town center as it looked around 1870. Exhibits such as historical children’s toys and a shoemaker’s workshop give visitors a glimpse of everyday life in Clenze in the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum also holds extensive sources on Clenze’s family and local history, as well as original archival documents dating from the 17th century to the present day. School classes can experience a practice lesson in a fully equipped classroom from more than a hundred years ago.
Events at the Culturladen
Admission to events at Clenze’s Culturladen is generally free. Check the program details before your visit.
Culture in the wider Lüchow-Dannenberg destination
The wider Lüchow-Dannenberg destination also offers other cultural and historical experiences. In the Rundling village of Lübeln, the Wendland Rundling Museum features a farmstead as an open-air museum. Traditional crafts are brought to life in the pottery workshop, forge, bakehouse and wheelwright’s workshop.
The Kulturelle Landpartie is a seasonal highlight: since 1989, artists and craftspeople across the wider Lüchow-Dannenberg destination have opened their farm gates and studios each year between Ascension Day and Pentecost. For twelve days, they present their work; the exact dates vary from year to year.
