Lower Saxony offers a variety of travel ideas: you can explore long-distance cycle routes, discover landscapes by the water or visit cultural sites. What matters most to you is a useful starting point for planning. The examples below show how the options differ—from multi-day cycling routes to individual gardens and exhibitions.

Cycling trips: long routes and specific stages

The Weser Cycle Route runs for around 520 kilometres over eight stages, from the source of the Weser in the Weser Uplands to the North Sea coast. It has been awarded four stars by the ADFC, is well signposted and has only a few inclines. The total distance and division into stages may change over time, so check the operator’s latest information when planning your trip. This will help you assess the route based on its actual course and the stages in question.

The approximately 225-kilometre Vechtetal Route offers a different combination of cycling and art. It follows the River Vechte and links the ride with kunstwegen, an open-air museum where you can experience contemporary art right along the route. More than 80 works of art have been installed along the route between Ohne and Zwolle. The description states that the Lower Saxony section between Ohne and Laar can comfortably be covered in two days. This estimate applies to that section, not to the entire cross-border route.

The Wadden Sea, forest trails and waterside landscapes

The Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park is both a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wadden Sea. Its recreation zone is Zone 3; the designated beach areas are intended for quiet recreation. Visitors can learn about the Wadden Sea habitat at many national park houses and centres along the Lower Saxony North Sea coast and on the East Frisian Islands. A stay by the sea thus offers a chance to discover this distinctive natural environment.

The Harz National Park has a network of around 600 kilometres of designated trails for hiking. At Lake Steinhude, you can explore the landscape via viewing platforms, nature trails, and signposted walking and cycling paths. Lake Steinhude is Lower Saxony’s largest inland lake; much of the wetland there is protected and provides valuable habitat for numerous birds, amphibians and aquatic insects. A trip on the historic emigrant boat also combines nature and history, offering special views of the lake.

Gardens, architecture and regional traditions

The Great Garden in Hanover is a Baroque garden covering around 50 hectares, preserved almost unchanged as a testament to its era. The Fagus Factory in Alfeld offers a different cultural perspective: it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, considered a pioneering example of industrial architecture and design, as well as a precursor to the Bauhaus style. Guided tours of the factory offer a closer look behind the scenes of the World Heritage Site and at its production process.

The Fagus-Gropius Exhibition occupies 3,000 square metres in the former warehouse for shoe lasts. Its themes range from the company’s history, architecture and restoration to a century of footwear fashion trends. The garden, building and exhibition therefore offer different ways to explore history and design.

Tea culture is also one of East Frisia’s cultural traditions. From the second half of the 17th century onwards, a distinct ceremony developed there, with particular tea blends, porcelain and various rituals. The Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture proposed “East Frisian Tea Culture” as a tradition typical of Lower Saxony for inclusion in the nationwide register of intangible cultural heritage.

Choose the focus of your trip

If you want to estimate how much time your trip will take, the cycling options differ considerably: the Weser Cycle Route is described as around 520 kilometres long, with eight stages; the Lower Saxony section of the Vechtetal Route between Ohne and Laar is estimated to take two days. For a cultural trip, you could instead focus on individual places such as the Great Garden in Hanover or the Fagus Factory in Alfeld. First, consider whether you want to make a route, a landscape or a particular cultural theme the focus of your trip. You can then search for hotels in Lower Saxony.
