Leisten has a rural character; specific points of interest include a listed residential and farm building, as well as the surrounding landscape and tours in the municipality. If you are planning a hotel stay, these themes may play a role in choosing your destination.

Agriculture and Nature Conservation

Leisten has retained its predominantly agricultural character. The municipal area covers 239 ha, of which 210 ha was used for agriculture in 2004. This represents just under nine-tenths of the area and gives a concrete sense of its rural character. This is a clear point of reference if land use plays a role in choosing your destination.

North of Leisten, the 480 ha Schnegaer Mühlenbachtal Nature Reserve stretches along the Schnegaer Mühlengraben. Within the municipality of Schnega, the nature reserve overlaps with the “Landgraben und Dummeniederung” Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

Landscape in the Schnega Destination

In the Schnega destination, the Schnegaer MĂĽhlenbach is a largely natural, unmodified watercourse over much of its length. In the part of the nature reserve within Schnega, the protected area is limited to the stream and a narrow strip along its banks. The protected area describes the spatial boundaries of the nature reserve in the Schnega section, while the description of the watercourse refers to the character of the stream over much of its length. It is therefore important to distinguish between the scope of protection and the landscape feature.

Listed Building at No. 8

The residential and farm building at No. 8 offers a tangible connection to Leisten’s architectural history. It is listed as a historic building in the register updated in June 2026 and was built in 1840. The historic building is a four-post farmhouse with a projecting entrance porch, brick infill walls and a pitched roof. Its construction date and architectural features give the listing a clear historical and architectural context.

Tours and Agriculture

The signposted Grenzland Tour is 29 km long. It follows a short section of the former inner-German border, passes through several small villages, and goes through Schnega and Bergen. The Swinmark Tour cycling route is 26 km long and starts at Schnega railway station. The Grenzland Tour is three kilometres longer; the Swinmark Tour also has a specified starting point.

A historical insight into agriculture comes from the “Höfe und Stationen DAN 2019” event. A station on arable farming was set up in the fields between Leisten and Schnega-Bahnhof. There, the arable farm run by René Sasse and his father presented its main crops: potatoes, winter wheat, rapeseed and sugar beet. The Sasse family used agricultural machinery to demonstrate the efficiency of irrigation and fertilisation. Thus, the 2004 land-use figures and the 2019 station offer two insights into Leisten’s agricultural character at different points in time.
