Jameln combines the characteristic layout of a Rundling village with historic houses and a manor chapel in one of the municipality’s districts. If you are interested in village history and architecture, the different places offer various points of interest: in Jameln, the old houses stand around the village square, while the manor chapel is in Breese im Bruche. Breselenz, also a district of the municipality, has its own historical significance.

Rundling village and historic houses in Jameln

Jameln is one of the larger Rundling villages in the Wendland region. Although much of its originally cohesive architectural heritage has been lost, the village has retained its characteristic shape. Three of the oldest two-post houses in the Wendland stand around the village square: «De lüt Ferienhof» from 1611, the «Hunderthaler-Haus» from 1681, and the former «Weberkate» from 1791. The three dates illustrate the different periods in which the houses were built. Cyclists and village residents often take a short break beneath the three large chestnut trees in the square.

Manor chapel in Breese im Bruche

The manor chapel was built in 1592 by Otto X. Grote and Elisabet von Holle in the Weser Renaissance style. It stands in Breese im Bruche on the grounds of the family’s former manor estate. Inside are an elaborately painted wooden barrel vault and gallery paintings dating from 1595. Their scenes draw on themes from the Old and New Testaments as well as the family history of Otto X. Grote and Elisabet von Holle. The paintings are by Hans Gödecke, a church painter from Walsrode.

During guided tours of the chapel, you can learn more about its history and that of the family. If you would like to include a tour in your travel plans, check the current options before your trip. This makes the chapel’s architectural history a specific reason to visit, without confusing it with the historic houses around the village square.

Breselenz and a shared meal

Breselenz is a former Rundling village documented since the 14th century. Its historical background therefore differs from Jameln, whose characteristic shape has survived despite the loss of much of its original architectural heritage. In Breselenz, a shared meal featuring regional products concludes the “Culture in the Wendland” tour. The meal is part of this tour and brings the cultural experience to a convivial close.

Culture in the wider travel destination of LĂĽchow-Dannenberg

The wider travel destination of Lüchow-Dannenberg is also home to other distinctive cultural sites. The Wendland Rundling Museum in Lübeln features a farmstead as an open-air museum. Traditional crafts are brought to life in the pottery, forge, bakehouse and wheelwright’s workshop. The Hitzacker Archaeological Centre, meanwhile, is an open-air museum on a site used by people around 4,000 years ago. Three reconstructed longhouses and numerous interactive stations invite visitors to explore the everyday lives of people in the past.

The museums in Dannenberg and Wustrow offer a different focus. The Waldemarturm Dannenberg displays finds and exhibits from the town’s early history, changing art exhibitions, and a permanent exhibition on flooding. The Wustrow Museum is housed in an impressive residence built for merchant Wilhelm Lüring in the late 19th century. Its changing exhibitions explore the more recent history of the Wendland, as well as social, political and economic history. These examples complement Jameln’s focus on village layout and chapel with further historical and cultural themes from the region.

Another way to experience culture in the wider travel destination of LĂĽchow-Dannenberg is the Kulturelle Landpartie. Since 1989, artists and craftspeople have opened the gates to their farmyards and studios each year between Ascension Day and Pentecost, presenting their work for twelve days. During the event, visitors can follow suggested cycling routes to reach exhibitions and theatre performances. Exact dates vary from year to year, so check the programme for your planned travel dates.
