Odenwald: Castles, Sea of Rocks and Roman History
Accommodation in Odenwald
In the Odenwald, rocks, castles and Roman relics tell stories of very different eras. The Sea of Rocks in Lautertal, Breuberg Castle and the Roman Villa Haselburg each have their own distinctive character. As you plan your trip, you can first consider whether geology, historic sites or riverside experiences should shape your stay.
Geology and the Sea of Rocks
The crystalline Odenwald includes deep-seated rocks such as gabbro, diorite, granodiorite and granite, as well as metamorphic rocks. The latter provide evidence of a continent-continent collision that took place 400 to 320 million years ago. This long geological history can also be put into context at the Sea of Rocks in Lautertal: the processes that formed it began more than 340 million years ago.
The Sea of Rocks combines this geological history with traces of human labor. Numerous relics of Roman stoneworking from the 3rd and 4th centuries give the site historical significance. Visitors who want to explore these topics in more detail can find information at the Sea of Rocks Information Center about the formation of the Sea of Rocks, Roman stoneworking, Siegfried’s Spring and the Bergstraße-Odenwald Geopark.
Castles and Roman history
Breuberg Castle has a history spanning more than 850 years and is one of the largest and best-preserved castles in southern Germany. The Breuberg Museum is located inside the castle. Another way to explore the site is via the adventure trail, which starts at the historic market square in Neustadt and leads uphill to the castle. Along the way, viewing platforms and a large slide provide stops of their own. Check whether the facilities described are available before your visit.
Roman history can also be experienced at other sites. The Roman Villa Haselburg near Hummetroth is an excavated and reconstructed villa rustica dating from the 2nd century AD. The Odenwald Limes is also among the region’s Roman relics. At the Gottersdorf Open-Air Museum, visitors can experience the Odenwald’s past firsthand.
Tours, riversides and outdoor activities
For longer tours, the Odenwald has four nature-oriented trekking camps. They are connected by daily stages and are suitable for individual, weekend and multi-day tours. If you plan to stay overnight at one of them, check the applicable booking and seasonal conditions before setting your itinerary.
Neckarsteinach offers a different perspective on the southern Odenwald: the town is surrounded by four medieval castles and has a five-kilometer car-free riverside promenade with signposted hiking and cycling trails. During the summer months, boats operated by the White Fleet run regularly between Heidelberg and Neckarsteinach. If you want to include a boat trip in your plans, take the current timetable into account.
There are also bookable activities at the Sea of Rocks: the Information Center offers guided tours and talks on geological development, stoneworking, legends, and the wildlife and habitat of the Felsberg. The center also has a bistro serving regional dishes. Availability and visitor services may change; check the latest information if you want to plan your visit around them.
Regional cuisine and finding the right accommodation
Green-kernel spelt and game dishes are among the foods served at Odenwald restaurants; the selection varies from one establishment to another. For meals outdoors, farm shops and regional vending machines offer local products. If you plan to shop at these, bear in mind that availability and opening hours may vary.
When looking for a hotel in the Odenwald, it helps to decide on the main focus of your trip first: would you like to explore castle history and Roman traces, learn more about the geological development of the Sea of Rocks, or include trails and riverbanks in your plans?
