Brensbach between the Bannoserweg and village history
Accommodation in Brensbach
In Brensbach, trails through forests and wide-ranging views meet places that tell the story of the village. Each route has a different focus: the Bannoserweg combines a circular walk with the story of a well-known Brensbach figure, the Weitsichtweg B3 leads to distinctive landmarks, and the R9 places Brensbach on a longer cycling route. In the village itself, a historic circular trail takes in buildings and objects significant to local history.
Hiking: Bannoserweg and Weitsichtweg B3
The digital Bannoserweg starts at the Alte Post in Brensbach. The circular route is about 20 kilometres long, passes through forests with far-reaching views, and returns to its starting point. Shortcuts let you choose your route length. When planning, you can therefore decide between completing the full loop and taking a shorter route. At several stops, information boards tell stories about the Bannoser’s pranks; at some prominent points, the trail is marked with a top hat.
The figure was based on Johann Heinrich Ritter, who was born in Brensbach in 1807. A master shoemaker, he was known as the “Bannoser” and became famous far beyond the village for his pranks. The trail features this story at its stops. This gives you a clear distinction when choosing between Brensbach’s routes: the Bannoserweg focuses on stories about a local figure, while the Weitsichtweg B3 is characterised by its landmarks and views.
The Weitsichtweg B3 descends to the Eberhardtsbrunnen spring and its shelter, then passes the Hinterwaldteich pond on the way back to the car park. From the Wallbacher Vogelherd on the B3, the view reaches as far as Brensbach and, on a clear day, Frankfurt. The view of Frankfurt therefore depends on visibility. Check the latest route conditions before setting out.
Cycling: Brensbach on the R9 cycle route
The R9 cycle route runs from the Rhine at Worms to Obernburg on the Main. In the Gersprenz Valley, it passes through Reichelsheim to Brensbach, then continues via Wallbach to Höchst. Brensbach is therefore part of a route that extends beyond the village itself. If you’re considering the village as one leg of a longer cycling tour, you can use the places and river landscapes mentioned here for orientation, rather than confusing the route with a local circular ride. The sections described indicate the direction of the R9; they do not mean that the entire cycle route runs within Brensbach. It’s a good idea to check the latest route conditions before setting off.
Discover local history on foot
The Brensbach Historic Village Trail takes you through the village, with information boards at stops sharing insights into local history. The route includes surviving buildings and objects significant to Brensbach’s history. It draws attention both to what has been preserved in the village and to the importance individual structures and objects have had in its development.
One prominent historic site is the Kirchhügel: a low, walled mound where the road from Höchst meets the village’s main axis. It is considered the original settlement nucleus of Brensbach. The description of the Kirchhügel brings together two perspectives: its visible form as a walled mound and its significance as the origin of the settlement. Together with the village trail, it offers a way to explore history that differs from the forest and scenic-view themes of the hiking trails.
Johann Heinrich Ritter was also honoured in literature. Local poet Karl Schäfer, a contemporary of Ritter, paid tribute to him with his novel “Eulenspiegel im Odenwald”. Brensbach’s local history thus extends beyond preserved buildings and objects to include a literary remembrance of the Bannoser. This gives you several themes to consider when planning your trip: a circular route with stops about the figure, a trail with viewpoints, a long-distance cycle route, and a walk through the village’s history.
