Reichelsheim (Odenwald) is defined by Reichenberg Castle. There are also circular routes ranging from 12.1 to 15.4 kilometers and the regional museum. Different interests may influence your choice of hotel: hiking, cultural heritage or a museum visit. Reichenberg Castle is prominently situated on a mountain ridge and shapes the view of Reichelsheim.

Circular routes with different highlights

The 12.1-kilometer Sagenweg Wildweibchenstein circular route passes Reichenberg Castle, the ruins of Rodenstein, the Falling Stream and Wildweibchenstein. It crosses the Buchwald forest and returns to the parking lot at Reichenberg School. The 15.4-kilometer Gersprenztal R7 route offers distant views as far as Neunkirchner Höhe, at 604 meters. It follows part of the Alemannenweg and returns to Reichelsheim via Beerfurth. Between them is the 14.7-kilometer Panoramaweg zwischen Erz und Stein R8: it passes through the former mining region around Rohrbach and Erzbach and offers a glimpse inside an old mine shaft.

The route lengths and themes offer different highlights: the Sagenweg links several named places and passes through the Buchwald forest, R7 is known for its distant views and partly shares a route with the Alemannenweg, while R8 explores the region’s mining history. Check local route information before setting out. The Reichelsheim municipal tourist information office has produced a separate leaflet for each of the Odenwaldklub-certified quality circular hiking trails R1, R6, R7 and R8. Check whether the leaflets are available.

Museum and visit planning

The Reichelsheim Odenwald Regional Museum is open on the second Sunday of each month from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Opening hours may change, so check them before your visit. Together with the castle and the themes of the circular routes, the museum offers another focus for planning your stay in Reichelsheim.

In the wider Odenwald destination

The wider Odenwald destination offers further cultural and landscape highlights. Breuberg Castle has a history spanning more than 850 years and is one of the largest and best-preserved castles in southern Germany. The Breuberg Museum is located inside the castle. An adventure trail leads uphill to the castle from the historic market square in Neustadt, with viewing platforms and a large slide along the way. Near Hummetroth lies the excavated and reconstructed Roman Villa Haselburg, a villa rustica dating from the 2nd century AD. The Odenwald Limes is also among the region’s Roman remains.

The crystalline Odenwald contains intrusive rocks such as gabbro, diorite, granodiorite and granite, as well as metamorphic rocks. The latter provide evidence of a continent-continent collision that took place between 400 and 320 million years ago. In the Lautertal, the Felsenmeer rock formation was created by geological processes that began more than 340 million years ago. Numerous traces of Roman stone working from the 3rd and 4th centuries give it historical significance. The Felsenmeer Information Center provides information about the formation of the Felsenmeer, Roman stone working, Siegfried’s Spring and the Bergstraße-Odenwald Geopark. Guided tours and talks on these subjects, as well as on legends, wildlife and the Felsberg habitat, can be booked there. The information center includes a bistro serving regional dishes; check the availability of offerings and bookings before visiting.
