Hesse can be explored through a variety of themes: historic sites and UNESCO World Heritage sites sit alongside natural landscapes and long-distance cycling routes. When planning your hotel stay, it helps to first choose the destinations that suit your trip. The state comprises ten regions, each with its own contrasts, cultural features and traditions; the places and routes featured here offer different starting points for making your selection.

World Heritage and cultural history

In Kassel, Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe combines grand landscape design with history. Covering 560 hectares, it is Europe’s largest hillside park and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013. Its historic water features still function as originally intended. Two aspects come together here: the expansive grounds and a historic technical feature that continues to serve its original purpose.

Another highlight awaits you at Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2021. The ensemble includes the Wedding Tower and Exhibition Hall, as well as the Museum Künstlerkolonie, the Plane Tree Grove and the artists’ houses. Its diverse components can be appreciated as a unified ensemble, rather than reducing Mathildenhöhe to a single building.

The history of Hesse’s World Heritage sites goes back further: Lorsch Abbey, together with the nearby Altenmünster mother abbey, received Hesse’s first World Heritage designation. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee’s certificate is dated 13 December 1991. Guided tours of the former Imperial Abbey of Lorsch are available to visitors. Sights include the abbey grounds with the King’s Hall, a church fragment and herb garden; Altenmünster Abbey; the Zehntscheune exhibition storehouse; the museum centre; and the Lauresham open-air laboratory. Tour arrangements may change, so check current dates and conditions before your visit.

The Messel Pit also combines World Heritage status with a very different timescale: it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995 and documents changes in animal and plant life up to 48 million years ago. The Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes, in turn, offers a glimpse into the history of an ancient frontier. Hesse accounts for 145 kilometres of its land section and 10 kilometres of its water section. The Saalburg, near Bad Homburg, is a reconstruction of a fort on the Limes in the Taunus.

A comparison of nature and trails

More than a third of Hesse consists of diverse natural landscapes, including volcanic plateaus and gently rolling vineyards. The Taunus is home to Hesse’s second-largest nature park, covering around 134,775 hectares. Kellerwald-Edersee National Park is Hesse’s only national park and protects one of Central Europe’s last near-natural European beech forests. Since June 2011, it has been part of the transnational UNESCO World Natural Heritage site “Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.”

For a specific hiking route, the 68-kilometre Urwaldsteig trail leads through Kellerwald-Edersee National Park to clearings with views of Lake Edersee. This offers a different scale of planning from the broader perspective opened up by the Taunus Nature Park and its expansive grounds. Hesse’s landscapes can also be explored via an extensive network of hiking and cycling trails, as well as waterways suitable for canoeing.

Cycling and practical information

Cycling routes can also be compared by their published distances. The Hessian long-distance cycle route R2, the Rivers Tour, is 202 kilometres long within Hesse and crosses the state along the rivers Ohm, Antreff, Schwalm, Lauter, Lüder, Fulda and Sinn. The Fulda Cycle Route R1 is 255 kilometres long in total; the route planner lists 239 kilometres for the Hessian section. The quality route has been awarded four stars under ADFC criteria. It runs from the heights of the Rhön down to the lowlands and is also recommended for inexperienced cyclists and families.

Consider which sights or activities will shape your trip, and check where a hotel is located in relation to your own plans. This will help you choose a base that suits your plans, rather than relying on a general impression of the state as a whole.

For travel to Frankfurt, the airport’s regional train station offers regular connections to Frankfurt Central Station; the journey takes 15 minutes. Since services may change, check the current timetable before travelling. The Hesse Ticket allows up to five people to travel throughout the state; here, too, it is advisable to check the applicable ticket conditions in advance.
