The district of Marburg-Biedenkopf is shaped by its varied low mountain landscapes, numerous half-timbered villages, and historic as well as young, modern towns. Together with their settlements, the Burgwald, the Gladenbach Uplands, the Amöneburg Basin and the Lahn Valley offer a wealth of geological, cultural-historical, historical-development, artistic and folkloric features and sights.

Tradition and Cultural History

In Biedenkopf, the Grenzgang festival is celebrated every seven years. This three-day festival takes place at historic forest sites and brings together locals and visitors from around the world. If you would like to combine your stay with this tradition, take the festival dates into account when planning.

One of the historically significant half-timbered buildings in the Marburg-Biedenkopf region of Hesse is the Schartenhof in Biedenkopf-Eckelshausen, which is over 300 years old. Today, it is a centre for art, culture and music. The seasonal programme includes exhibitions of work from the region, as well as exhibitions of painting, photography, graphic art and sculpture. There is also puppet theatre featuring performances of classical operas. As the exhibitions are seasonal, it is best to plan your visit around the relevant dates.

The museum in Biedenkopf Castle presents the cultural history of the Hinterland region over the past 900 years in its 1,000 m² exhibition space. Its size and broad timespan give this subject room to span many eras. Another way to explore regional history is the Route of Labour and Industrial Culture in the district of Marburg-Biedenkopf. It showcases the history of labour and industry, as well as the historical and modern capabilities of local businesses. The route includes tourist attractions and out-of-school learning sites; its locations feature numerous interactive stations that share knowledge about the region.

Hiking Trails in the Burgwald

For planning your hikes, the lengths of two premium trails offer a useful comparison: the Himmelsberg Tour is 18 km long, and the Galgenberg Tour is 13.2 km. The Himmelsberg Tour passes through the villages of Burgholz and Himmelsberg in the Burgwald region. Along the way, the landscape alternates between forests, meadows and fields; the route also passes through a Natura 2000 protected area.

The Galgenberg Tour passes through GemĂĽnden and goes by the historically significant Jewish cemetery there. The routes therefore differ not only in length, but also in the landscape and cultural features mentioned: one crosses forests, meadows, fields and a protected area, while the other passes a site of historical significance.

Water and Cycling at the Perfstausee

Non-motorised boats are permitted on the Perfstausee; stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing are also possible. A walking path suitable for year-round use and for pushchairs runs around the lake. This makes it possible to include water activities and a walk in the same place when planning your trip.

The Perfstausee is also a popular destination for cycling trips: it lies at the intersection of numerous regional and long-distance cycle routes. There are e-bike charging stations, a bicycle repair station and plenty of free parking on site. Nearby, the “Im Wehr bei Breidenstein” nature reserve offers a refuge, especially for waterfowl.

Explore Marburg on Foot

In Marburg, you can book public city tours with a ticket for a date that suits you. To get your bearings between two well-known landmarks: it takes about 15 minutes to walk from St Elizabeth's Church to the historic Market Square. Elevators at Pilgrimstein can help with the ascent.
