There are various ways to explore Ebsdorfergrund: The Ebsdorfergrund Circular Hiking Trail runs past nearly all the districts, while other routes link individual landscapes, scenic viewpoints, or historic attractions. The area’s cultural points of interest also vary, from a tower’s former role as an outpost to domestic life and culture in a museum. During your stay, you can choose between a route across the municipality, a specific landscape experience, and historic sites.

Hiking Trails and Landscapes

The Ebsdorfergrund Circular Hiking Trail loops around the entire municipal area and runs past nearly all the districts of the municipality. It passes particularly scenic spots and viewpoints. The Ebsdorfergrund Trail takes a different approach: It is 25 km long and passes through five districts. The route begins and ends at Frauenberg Castle ruins, passing through Ebsdorf and Rauischholzhausen, among other places, and linking historically significant sights. In good weather, the trail offers panoramic views as far as the Vogelsberg, Kellerwald, and Taunus.

Around RoĂźberg, the RoĂźberg Adventure Trail runs for more than five kilometers through a landscape shaped by the Zwester-Ohm. It includes six oases where you can explore the habitats of a unique stream and floodplain landscape. If you are interested in rivers and floodplains, this trail has a clear thematic focus.

The Panoramic Circular Trail runs around Kirchberg in Wittelsberg and is ideal for an evening stroll. Along the way, the Wittelsberger Warte tower is illuminated and highlighted. This means you can choose between the weather-dependent panoramic views on the Ebsdorfergrund Trail and an evening stroll with an illuminated destination.

Culture and History

The Wittelsberger Warte was built in 1431 as an outpost for the Hessian landgraves against the Mainz-controlled town of Amöneburg. Rauischholzhausen Castle is a particularly impressive attraction in Ebsdorfergrund and has a 30-hectare castle park. At the local history museum in Hachborn, nine fully furnished rooms on two floors reflect rural everyday life and domestic culture over the past 200 years. A loop of the Huguenot and Waldensian Trail in the Marburg region leads to the former “Waldensian colony” of Frauenberg.

The historic sites appeal to different interests: The Warte represents an outpost role dating back to the 15th century, the museum showcases rural everyday life and domestic culture over a period of 200 years, and the trail loop leads to a site with Waldensian history. You can choose according to your interest in architecture, everyday culture, or history.

In the wider Marburg-Biedenkopf destination

The Marburg-Biedenkopf district encompasses diverse low mountain landscapes, numerous half-timbered villages, and historic as well as young, modern towns. Another hiking destination in the wider area is the 18 km premium Himmelsbergtour hike in the Burgwald region. It leads through Burgholz and Himmelsberg, through forests, meadows, and fields, and through a Natura 2000 protected area. As a cultural complement, the museum in Biedenkopf Castle presents 900 years of cultural history from the Hinterland region across 1,000 m².

For cycling excursions, the Perfstausee in the district offers a different point of interest: It lies at the intersection of numerous regional and long-distance cycling routes and is a popular destination. There are e-bike charging stations, a bicycle repair station, and ample free parking at the lake.
