Accommodation in Caldern
Three circular hiking trails and the history of the monastery mill offer specific themes for a trip to Caldern – from hiking to local history.
Three Circular Hiking Trails in Caldern
The three circular hiking trails differ both in length and in their points of interest. The L1 passes through Dilschhausen, is 12.9 kilometres long and leads to two churches, the “Paradies” and the historic Rimberg Tower. The L2 via Kernbach is 16.7 kilometres long and combines nature with village history. The family-friendly L3 is the shortest of the three routes at 6.7 kilometres. It leads through fields and woodland and offers views of Caldern. As well as the theme of each route, you can therefore take its length into account when choosing: the L2 is the longest, and the L3 the shortest route.
The Rimberg viewpoint can be reached from Caldern via hiking trails. Trail conditions and signposting may change; access to the tower may also vary. Check these details before your hike.
Monastery Mill and Refreshments
The monastery mill in Caldern was first mentioned in 1389 and originally belonged to a Cistercian monastery, later to the University of Marburg. The Pfeiffer family continued the milling tradition until 1987; their grandson Markus Schautes then carried it on. This succession gives the mill a long history, without implying anything about its current operation or visitor access.
The “Zur Lahnbrücke” restaurant in Lahntal-Caldern offers meals and accommodation. If you are planning to dine there or stay overnight, check what is currently on offer before your trip, as businesses and services can change.
More Experiences in the Broader Lahntal Destination
The broader Lahntal destination also offers historical and cultural attractions in GoĂźfelden. The year 1802 can be seen in Roman numerals on the eastern side of the old bridge. The bridge can only be crossed on foot or by bicycle.
The “Following in Otto Ubbelohde’s Footsteps through Goßfelden” circular trail was inaugurated in June 2010. It starts at the museum in the Lahn meadows and runs for around 1.5 kilometres, with 16 stops, mostly through old Goßfelden. Ubbelohde’s drawings, illustrations and paintings are presented at locations in the village where the motifs—including fairy-tale illustrations—can still be seen or appear to be recognisable. Art and local history are thus linked along the same route.
The Wichtelhäuser are also a destination in their own right in the broader Lahntal area: a signposted hiking trail leads from Brungershausen to the imposing rock formation. The Wichtelhäuser rocks lie a little way off the woodland path, invite visitors to climb them and offer views across the Lahntal, towards Kernbach and the Rimberg on the opposite side.
Part of the former monastery wall has been preserved beside Caldern’s St Nicholas Church; the remains of the wall have been restored. This is another historical detail in the broader Lahntal destination, which can be considered alongside the monastery mill in Caldern without equating the two structures.
