Steffenberg: Half-timbered houses and hiking trails
Accommodation in Steffenberg
If you’re looking for hotels in Steffenberg, it helps to consider the themes you want to shape your stay. In Niedereisenhausen, the Old Church offers a glimpse into the history of its architecture and furnishings; near Steinperf, hiking trails wind through forests and meadows and along streams.
The Old Church in Niedereisenhausen
The Old Church in Niedereisenhausen is a half-timbered building dating from around 1660. Inside, a Baroque pulpit from 1730 and a medieval altar have been preserved. In 2017, the church received the Hessian Heritage Conservation Award. The building, its furnishings and the award each give the church a distinct historical significance.
Coming from Obereisenhausen, you’ll pass the 18th-century bakehouse and cross the road that runs alongside the Perf. The old half-timbered church in Niedereisenhausen lies just behind it, somewhat obscured from view. The directions therefore also indicate that the church is not immediately visible.
Hiking and a rest near Steinperf
The Steinperf Circular Trail takes you along narrow paths through varied stretches of forest and past lush wildflower meadows and gently bubbling streams. Forests, meadows and streams create different impressions along the route. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Kreuzberg is a hill with heathland character and scenic views. Above Steinperf, at the entrance to the forest, there is a rest area with a giant chair where visitors can let their legs dangle.
The former bakehouse in Steinperf is also a popular photo spot. It adds a distinct cultural touch to the village alongside its hiking landscape. If you plan your stay around these interests, you can choose between a hike, a place to rest and a feature of local architectural history.
At the starting point of the hiking route, the hikers’ hostel offers simple overnight accommodation by prior arrangement; groups can also stop there for a meal. Offers and arrangements may change. So check with the operator in advance about the conditions for your overnight stay or your group’s meal stop.
Culture and countryside in Marburg-Biedenkopf
The Marburg-Biedenkopf district encompasses diverse upland landscapes, numerous half-timbered villages, and both historic and modern cities. In Biedenkopf, the museum in the castle, known as the Hinterland Museum, presents 900 years of cultural history of the Hinterland across 1,000 m². The museum’s view of the region offers a different perspective from the individual Old Church in Niedereisenhausen.
Another cultural venue is the Schartenhof in Biedenkopf-Eckelshausen, a half-timbered building more than 300 years old and one of the region’s historically significant buildings of its kind. Today, Schartenhof is a center for art, culture and music. Seasonal exhibitions feature work from the region as well as painting, photography, graphic art and sculpture; there is also a marionette theater with performances of classical operas. Since the exhibitions are seasonal, check the program and dates before your visit.
For a different focus, Perfstausee in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district offers opportunities on the water and along the shore. Non-motorized boats are permitted there; activities include stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing. A walking path around the lake is open year-round and suitable for strollers. The lake also has e-bike charging stations, a bicycle repair station and ample free parking. This makes it easy to distinguish among the region’s cultural attractions, water activities and lakeside walks.
