Whether you choose Biedenkopf for its architectural and regional history, its half-timbered houses or excursions into the countryside, the local highlights vary. At Landgrave’s Castle and in historic houses, culture and architecture take center stage; on Sackpfeife, circular hiking trails and viewpoints invite you to spend time outdoors. At Perfstausee, you can also enjoy cycling and water activities.

Castle and regional history

Landgrave’s Castle in Biedenkopf was built in the mid-15th century by Henry III of Hesse-Marburg and is one of the state of Hesse’s significant cultural monuments. An architectural history tour takes you through the entire castle and explains its distinctive features. Check the latest visiting arrangements in advance if you plan to join the tour.

The Hinterland Museum in the castle presents the regional and cultural history of the Hinterland. Its main themes include the history of industry, transport, agriculture and crafts, as well as traditional costumes, domestic life and everyday culture. Founded as a regional museum in 1908, it combines economic themes with insights into daily life and ways of living.

A city tour lasting about two hours explores Hesse’s architectural history through the example of Biedenkopf. It includes an introduction to how to read a half-timbered house from central Hesse. Tours are offered on selected Sundays during the season; arrange a date with the guide.

Half-timbered houses, art and distinctive buildings

The Schartenhof in Biedenkopf-Eckelshausen, more than 300 years old, is one of the historically significant half-timbered buildings in the Marburg-Biedenkopf region of Hesse. Today, it is a center for creativity and a venue for art, culture and music. Its program includes a puppet theater presenting classical operas. Check current performance dates before your visit.

The Schenkbarsche Haus tells a different story of architecture: the five-story half-timbered building has two lower floors dating from 1491; Amtmann Schenkbar had the three upper floors added in 1610. By appointment, the private museum opens the interior of Biedenkopf’s oldest house and its collection of icons to visitors. There are no regular opening hours.

Sackpfeife and Perfstausee

At Sackpfeife, the large parking lot is the starting point for three circular hiking trails of different lengths. The routes vary in length, so check trail conditions before setting out. The Kaiser Wilhelm Tower marks the highest point of Sackpfeife. From its observation platform, there are panoramic views across the ridges of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, Lahn-Dill-Bergland Nature Park and the Marburg region. A viewpoint on Sackpfeife offers another view across the ridges of the Slate Mountains and the Marburg hills, extending as far as the Taunus on clear days.

Perfstausee is in the Breidenstein district of Biedenkopf. Visitors can use a beach volleyball court and a disc golf course; the lake can also be explored in non-motorized boats and on stand-up paddleboards. One section of the lake lies within the “Im Wehr bei Breidenstein” nature reserve, which provides protected habitat, particularly for waterbirds. The lake is also a destination for cycling excursions, as numerous regional and long-distance cycling routes meet here.

When to visit and special experiences

The Grenzgang festival is held in Biedenkopf every seven years. This three-day event takes place at historic forest sites and brings together residents and visitors. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check whether the next edition falls during your travel dates.

In Biedenkopf-Kombach, games at the playground by the shelter recreate the true story of the Kombach post robbers. If you would like to take part, contact the organizer to arrange it. Together with the historic houses, city tour and cultural offerings, this gives you a choice of different ways to explore the area during your stay, from architectural history to a distinctive local event.
