Weather (Hesse): History and Excursions
Accommodation in Weather
When looking for a hotel in Weather (Hesse), the focus of your trip is an important starting point: the old town offers historic sights, while other tours and cultural destinations are in the wider Marburg-Biedenkopf destination. This helps you distinguish local attractions from what the region has to offer when planning your days.
Old Town and Historic Sites
The collegiate church has stood on Klosterberg since the 13th century. You can also explore the historic old town on a city walk—either on your own or as part of a guided tour. This gives you two ways to get to know the town: at your own pace or accompanied by a guide.
The history of the former synagogue is also linked to Weather. The town was able to acquire the building in 2000; it was extensively restored as part of the old town’s renovation. The Träger- und Förderverein ehemalige Synagoge Wetter e. V. is committed to preserving it and using it as a memorial, a place of learning and a venue for cultural encounters.
Another historic landmark is the Diebsturm (Thieves’ Tower). In the 18th century, citizens of Weather were imprisoned there. The tower was probably used as a prison until the early 19th century. The reported date for the end of this use is explicitly only an estimate.
Cycle Route, Viewpoints and Excursions
The 21-kilometre Treisbachtal cycle route runs from Biedenkopf to Weather, or in the opposite direction. For trip planning, this cycling route can be clearly distinguished from the options in the old town: here, the focus is on a route between two places; there, it is on a town walk with historic sites.
On the Extratour Stirnhelle trail, the Stirnhelle, Gerlachsberg and Am Rienert viewpoints offer views over the Burgwald, Mellnau Castle and the town of Weather. Stirnhelle and Gerlachsberg are each at an elevation of 387 metres, while Am Rienert is at 285 metres. The neighbouring Burgwald, with Christenberg, is also mentioned as an excursion destination near Weather.
More destinations in the wider Marburg-Biedenkopf destination
Marburg-Biedenkopf also offers various options for active days. The Himmelsbergtour is an 18-kilometre premium hiking trail in the Burgwald region and leads through Burgholz and Himmelsberg. Forests, meadows and fields characterise the route; it also passes through a Natura 2000 protected area. This hike is a regional offering and should not be confused with the historic sites in Weather’s old town.
Non-motorised boats are permitted on the Perfstausee reservoir, including stand-up paddleboards and canoes. A walking path around the lake can be used year-round and is suitable for pushchairs. Visitor facilities there also include e-bike charging stations, a bicycle repair station and free parking. The Perfstausee is therefore another distinct option within the wider Marburg-Biedenkopf destination.
Culture in Marburg-Biedenkopf
The wider Marburg-Biedenkopf destination offers more points of interest for those interested in cultural history. The museum in Biedenkopf Castle presents the cultural history of the Hinterland region over the past 900 years in its role as a regional history museum, across 1,000 square metres. In Biedenkopf-Eckelshausen stands the Schartenhof, a more than 300-year-old half-timbered building and one of the region’s historically significant structures. Today, it is a centre for art, culture and music. Its programme includes seasonal exhibitions featuring work from the region, as well as exhibitions of painting, photography, graphic art and sculpture; it also hosts marionette theatre performances of classical operas.
Another regional cultural event is the Grenzgang in Biedenkopf, which is celebrated every seven years. The three-day festival takes place at historic forest sites and brings together local residents and visitors from around the world. Unlike Weather’s permanent historic sites, the Grenzgang is a recurring festival held every seven years.
If you are looking for a hotel in Weather (Hesse), you can plan your trip around the focus you prefer: the old town and its history are at the heart of Weather itself, while cycling, hiking and cultural activities broaden the picture of the wider Marburg-Biedenkopf destination.
