Hoher Meißner, the highest mountain in the region and home of Mother Hulda, makes a striking feature of Werra-Meißner District. For tourism, the district is part of Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land. Cherry trails in Witzenhausen, hiking opportunities and a varied seasonal natural landscape offer different highlights for your trip.

Werra-Meißner-Kreis

Nature and the Seasons

Between the Werra Valley, Hoher Meißner and Kaufunger Wald, the region has great geological diversity, varied landscapes and a rich flora and fauna. The changing seasons also bring different impressions: in Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land, the cherry blossom in the Witzenhausen cherry-growing area and the orchid bloom are part of the seasonal landscape, along with the pink poppy fields in Germerode and Grandenborn, Mother Hulda’s flower meadows, autumn foliage and winter sports on Hoher Meißner. The timing of natural phenomena varies from year to year. So if you are planning your trip around the blossoms or autumn foliage, it is worth checking current conditions. More than 35 percent of the area of Werra-Meißner District is designated as nature reserves. A large part of the geopark also belongs to Hotspot 17, one of only 30 areas nationwide with exceptional biodiversity.

Hiking and Cycling

In Werra-Meißner District, a dense network of certified premium trails and the Werra-Burgen-Steig Hessen hiking trail lead hikers to particularly scenic areas in the geopark. The Premiumweg P1 Hoher Meißner is 13.7 kilometers long and rated as difficult. Four Nordic walking routes, ranging from six to twelve kilometers, start at Bergwildpark Meißner in Meißner. This gives you a choice of different route lengths when planning your outing, while the P1 also has a designated difficulty rating to help guide you. When planning a specific trip, check the seasonal notices for the P1 and the local availability of the Nordic walking routes.

For cyclists, the approximately 300-kilometer-long Werratal cycle route is a highlight in its own right. In 2025, the German Cyclists’ Federation awarded it three stars as a quality route; this award applies to 2025.
