Discover Ringgau: towers, church and nature
Accommodation in Ringgau
Explore Ringgau through specific trails and cultural destinations during your stay. The premium trail P19 Datterode, Gänsekerleweg, leads up to the Berliner Turm. Another notable place is the Point India observation tower on the Sohlberg: it is permanently accessible and is a relic of the US military base OP-India, built in 1984. Inside the restored tower, an exhibit documents its history. Lüderbach is home to an open church dating from the 15th or 16th century. It contains a unique late-Gothic Lamentation altarpiece.
The wider travel destination: Werra-Meißner District
For tourism, the Werra-Meißner District is part of the Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land. Hoher Meißner is the region’s highest mountain and is considered Frau Holle’s home. Between the Werra Valley, Hoher Meißner and Kaufunger Wald, the region is shaped by geological diversity, varied landscapes, and a rich flora and fauna. More than 35 percent of the Werra-Meißner District’s area is designated as nature conservation land. A large part of the Geo-Naturpark belongs to hotspot 17, one of only 30 areas nationwide with outstanding biological diversity.
Seasonal attractions include the cherry blossom in Kirschenland Witzenhausen, orchid blooms, pink poppy fields in Germerode and Grandenborn, Frau Holle’s flower meadows, autumn foliage and winter sports on Hoher Meißner. The timing of natural events varies from year to year. The season itself can therefore help guide you as you plan your trip.
Hiking and cycling in the region
The Werra-Meißner District has a dense network of certified premium trails, as well as the Werra-Burgen-Steig Hessen, which take hikers to particularly scenic parts of the Geo-Naturpark. The premium trail P1 Hoher Meißner is 13.7 kilometres long and rated difficult. Four Nordic walking routes, ranging from 6 to 12 kilometres, start at the Bergwildpark Meißner in Meißner. For cyclists, the approximately 300-kilometre Werratal Cycle Route is another regional option; in 2025, the German Cyclists’ Federation awarded it three stars as a quality route.
Culture and seasonal activities
The Cherry Trail 3 in Witzenhausen offers insights into the last 100 years of cherry growing and, during blossom season, passes through old orchard meadows and new plantations. At the cherry car park on Cherry Trail 3 at Burgberg Witzenhausen, the Cherry Cinema shows a free film, just under 20 minutes long, about cherry growing in Kirschenland Witzenhausen and other excursion tips in the Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land. Visits are seasonal; check in advance whether the Cherry Cinema is open during your visit.
A guided walking tour of Witzenhausen introduces the half-timbered town known for its cherries, its three churches and other historic buildings. The Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land events calendar also offers guided hikes, nature experiences, family activities and themed tours around Hoher Meißner throughout the year. Individual events take place on specific dates; check these when planning your trip.
