Discover Hersfeld-Rotenburg
Accommodation in Hersfeld-Rotenburg
When looking for a hotel in Hersfeld-Rotenburg, you can choose your destination based on cultural events, architectural history or nature. Bad Hersfeld is known for its abbey ruins and two annual festivals; Rotenburg an der Fulda for a distinctive row of half-timbered houses along the river. Nentershausen adds Tannenberg Castle, its castle festival and the starting point of the Werra-Burgen-Steig trail. Protected areas and hiking trails round out the district’s attractions. These different highlights can help you first decide what brings you on your trip.
Festivals and architectural history
The Bad Hersfeld Festival has been held annually in the abbey ruins since 1951, in what is considered the world’s largest Romanesque church ruin. The Lullusfest has been celebrated every year without interruption since 852 in honor of the town’s founder, Lullus, during the week of October 16. The two events have different planning anchors: the festival venue for the Bad Hersfeld Festival and the recurring annual period for the Lullusfest.
The Nentershausen Castle Festival takes place every year on the first weekend in October, with more than 600 performers. Check the exact festival dates for the year in question if you are planning your trip around it. Tannenberg Castle in Nentershausen was built around 1300 by Ludwig I of Baumbach and was a fiefdom of Hersfeld Abbey. Nentershausen thus brings together two points in time: the recurring annual festival date and the castle’s history, dating back to around 1300.
Half-timbered houses, nature and hiking trails
The historic town center of Rotenburg an der Fulda has more than 350 half-timbered houses, which, together with Rotenburg Castle, form a distinctive row along the banks of the Fulda. For a trip focused on half-timbered architecture, Rotenburg offers a different highlight from Bad Hersfeld, with its festivals and abbey ruins: here, the houses and castle together shape the riverside streetscape.
The nature reserves also offer specific points of interest. The Rhäden Nature Reserve is part of the Green Belt Germany biotope network. The Große Doline near Rockensüß covers 60,000 square meters and is home to rare orchids and ferns. The reserve’s place in a biotope network and the protected area’s named plant species cater to different interests in nature.
For hikers, the FranzosenstraĂźe in Cornberg is part of the Wartburg Trail and the long-distance hiking trail X9. On the watershed between the Werra and Fulda rivers, it offers views of the cultural landscape. The Werra-Burgen-Steig, by contrast, starts in Nentershausen. This gives trip planners two specific points of reference: the views from the FranzosenstraĂźe and the start of the Werra-Burgen-Steig.
Find a hotel to suit your reason for traveling
Use these highlights to help choose your destination, then look for a hotel for your stay. If an event determines your travel dates, check the exact dates of the castle festival for the year in question in advance.
