Friedewald: Moated Castle, Local History Museum and Dreienberg
Accommodation in Friedewald
Friedewald offers three distinct themes for your stay: the moated castle, the local history museum and nature around nearby Dreienberg. At the castle, history first documented in 1302 goes hand in hand with a self-guided audio tour; the museum focuses on the region’s craft and farming heritage. At Dreienberg, the focus is on the nature reserve, plants and geological features. You can choose what to explore based on whether you prefer architectural history, regional culture or nature.
Friedewald Moated Castle and Historic Trails
Visitors can explore Friedewald Moated Castle independently with an audio tour. To do so, they scan the QR codes displayed at the stations with their mobile phones. The Kuppenrhön Cycle Route and Luther Trail 1521 pass by the castle. Friedewald’s fortified moated castle ruins are also among the historic sights along the 30-kilometre Kuppenrhön Tour, which makes a suitable day trip through the hilly landscape of the northern Rhön. The castle thus combines a self-guided audio experience with several named routes.
Nature and Wayfinding at Dreienberg
Around Friedewald, the plateau and slopes of Dreienberg are covered with calcareous beech forests. These include wood millet beech forest, pea-flowered beech forest and orchid beech forest. The area around Dreienberg was designated a nature reserve in 1986. Together with Landecker Berg, Dreienberg forms the watershed between the Werra and Fulda rivers. This combination of forest types, protected status and geographical location offers several interesting ways to experience the natural area.
On the Dreienberg Extra Tour, you can see lime-loving plants such as numerous orchid species and silver thistles from the trail. Information boards add details about flora and fauna, historical background and geological features. The nature reserve can be explored from three hiking car parks via a panoramic trail that passes the foundations of Dreienburg Castle. A visit can therefore take in both plant life and landscape and history.
Local History Museum and Regional Culture
The Friedewald Local History Museum focuses on the region’s craft and farming heritage. Most of the objects on display date from 1850 to 1940. In contrast to the moated castle, first documented in 1302, the museum’s collection therefore represents a considerably later period. This contrast offers two different historical points of reference: the architectural history of the moated castle and the craft and farming heritage represented in the museum.
Groups can visit the local history museum outside regular opening hours by arranging a visit in advance. On request, the local history association offers a full-day programme with a guided tour led by someone familiar with the area, lunch, coffee and dinner. If you plan to take advantage of this offer, confirm its current availability when booking.
