The Lahn-Dill District offers a range of different focuses for planning your trip: literature and optics in Wetzlar, industrial and mining history in Dillenburg and Solms-Oberbiel, caves in Breitscheid, and trails through the countryside. If you are looking for a hotel in the Lahn-Dill District, you can start by choosing a location based on your interests during your stay. Would you prefer to focus on museums and exhibitions, the world of caves, or trails through the countryside?

Literature and Optics in Wetzlar

The Lottehaus in Wetzlar recalls Goethe’s encounter with Charlotte Buff and the summer of 1772. Two rooms on the first floor house a permanent exhibition on the origins and impact of Goethe’s first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther.” The Optikparcours offers a different way to experience Wetzlar: it invites visitors to experiment with and discover optical phenomena, including in a walk-in kaleidoscope. The distinction is useful when planning your visit: the Lottehaus focuses on literary history, while the Optikparcours invites you to discover optical phenomena.

Industrial History and Mining

In Dillenburg, Villa GrĂĽn presents objects and meticulously recreated scenes of industrial and artisanal production in the Dill region across more than 20 rooms. The basement houses an elaborate, media-rich mining exhibition. Villa GrĂĽn thus combines displays of production and craftsmanship with a dedicated focus on mining.

The Grube Fortuna visitor mine in Solms-Oberbiel is the only Hessian anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The Fortuna Feld- und Grubenbahnmuseum (Field and Mine Railway Museum) is also located in Solms-Oberbiel. It has 50 historic field and mine railway locomotives and 100 wagons; trains operate according to a timetable. If you would like to include a train ride in your plans, check the timetable before your visit.

Caves and Views

The Herbstlabyrinth-Adventhöhlensystem in Breitscheid is the largest cave system in Hesse and is among the most significant cave systems in Germany. On weekdays and during school holidays, you can reach the Herbstlabyrinth show cave in Breitscheid on RMV bus route 510, getting off at the Breitscheid, Rathaus stop. From there, the walk to the cave takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Check the current timetable before setting out.

Burg Greifenstein offers another distinctive experience: its twin towers provide spectacular views. Glockenwelt Burg Greifenstein displays almost 100 bells in an exhibition tracing a thousand years of German bell history. These are two different highlights: the views from the twin towers and the history of the bells.

Trails Through the Countryside

The Lahn-Dill-Bergland-Pfad, known far beyond the region, offers a particularly rewarding way to explore the landscape of the Lahn-Dill District. The Lahnwanderweg crosses the Lahn Valley and also explores the district’s landscape. The difference in choosing between them is the specific landscape described: the Lahnwanderweg crosses the Lahn Valley, while the Lahn-Dill-Bergland-Pfad focuses on the district’s landscape.
