In Schöffengrund, historic townscapes and buildings sit alongside opportunities for hiking and cycling. The area’s history is reflected in its churches, school buildings, half-timbered houses, and archaeological traces. Woodland and agricultural paths complement the cultural focus with outdoor activities. This lets you plan your trip around the topics that interest you most: historic architecture, early history, or tours through the countryside.

Churches, schools, and historic town centers

The Evangelical Church in Laufdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1338 and is one of the oldest village churches in Hesse. On a walk through Laufdorf, you can also discover well-preserved half-timbered buildings, some of which date back to the 17th century. The former school, built in 1908, stands on Lahnstraße. It is the only one of the town’s four former school buildings that remains. The history of the buildings here therefore ranges from a village church documented in the Middle Ages to a school building from the early 20th century.

In Oberquembach, the Old School is one of the few surviving buildings of its kind in the Lahn-Dill-Kreis. It was built from rammed earth in 1839. The bakery at Usinger Straße 8 is also one of the town’s well-preserved old buildings and is worth a visit. Oberwetz offers a different perspective on village history with its old town center: it is considered a special attraction and is one of the best-preserved historic town centers in the southern Lahn-Dill-Kreis. You can also find archaeological traces in Oberwetz: to the right of Oberkleener Straße, about 300 meters from the edge of the village, are 47 burial mounds dating from the Hallstatt period, 750 to 450 BC.

In Schwalbach, the present-day Evangelical Church was built between 1763 and 1767 after the old church collapsed in 1760. The oldest of its three bells dates from 1692. The Old Town Hall on Reiskirchener Straße is one of the town’s most attractive sights. In Niederquembach, the church stands on a slope above the old town center and is surrounded by the remains of an old cemetery wall. The year 1707 is inscribed above the framed entrance door of the building at Quembachallee 11a.

Countryside and trails

At 423 meters, Köhlerberg is the highest point in the municipality of Schöffengrund and offers panoramic views in every direction. The municipality lies within the Hochtaunus Nature Park. The Schwalbach mineral spring also connects the landscape with local history: it has been known for centuries and was first enclosed around the middle of the 16th century.

In Schöffengrund and the neighboring municipalities, you can use well-maintained woodland and agricultural paths for hiking and cycling; longer routes spanning many kilometers are also possible. This makes walks between historic buildings and longer routes through the countryside two different options to consider when planning your trip. Check current conditions before setting out on a hike or bike ride, as route conditions can change.

Visitor planning tips

The municipality’s official culture and leisure page links to the events calendar, where you can check specific dates.

Culture in the wider destination of Lahn-Dill-Kreis

Other cultural attractions in the wider destination of Lahn-Dill-Kreis can also be included in your trip plans. The Lottehaus in Wetzlar recalls Goethe’s encounter with Charlotte Buff and the summer of 1772. Two rooms on the first floor house a permanent exhibition on the creation and impact of his first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther.”

In Dillenburg, Villa Grün presents objects and detailed displays of industrial and artisanal production in the Dill region across more than 20 rooms. The basement also features an extensive, media-rich mining exhibition. These regional examples highlight different subjects: literary history in Wetzlar, and industrial, artisanal, and mining history in Dillenburg.
