Other distinct cultural attractions can be found in the wider Lahn-Dill-Kreis destination.
Hiking in the municipality of Ehringshausen
The Köhlerweg is one of 19 certified premium circular trails. It is 12.4 km long and takes about 3.5 hours to complete at a moderate fitness level. It leads over the slopes of Kölschhausen to the Koppe, the highest point on the route, and past open stream valleys north of Dreisbach and hillside meadows with scenic views.
Another hiking route covers about 21 km, with around 180 m of elevation gain and a stated walking time of about six hours. It passes through the forests of the formerly independent municipalities of Ehringshausen, Dillheim, Daubhausen and Greifenthal. Compared with the Köhlerweg, it is longer: the Köhlerweg is listed as taking about 3.5 hours at a moderate fitness level, while the longer route takes about six hours.
The 23 km Ehringshausen Long-Distance Hiking Trail on the left bank of the Dill runs through the municipality’s woodland north of the Dill. It starts at the water reservoir in Katzenfurt, passes through Dreisbach, Niederlemp and Breitenbach, and returns to Katzenfurt via Kölschhausen. The 11.8 km Ehringshausen Long-Distance Hiking Trail on the right bank of the Dill starts in Daubhausen and passes through Ehringshausen-Ichelhausen and the Ehringshausen and Daubhausen forests. Along the Hohe Straße, it continues to Greifenthal-Steckenmesser; via Greifenthal, the route returns to Daubhausen on the Historic Huguenot Trail.
The Koppe, Greifenthal and the local history museum
The Koppe is an extinct volcano, 351 m high, and the highest elevation in the Kölschhausen district. It was the first nature reserve in the Wetzlar district. On its northern side, a column formation is exposed in an old quarry at a height of about 15 m.
The Historic Huguenot Hiking Trail starts in the district of Greifenthal. In the early years after its founding, the Huguenot village of Greifenthal had no cemetery of its own, so the dead were carried to the shared cemetery in Daubhausen. The Ehringshausen Local History Museum covers village history, old toys, and the life and work of Dr. Hermann Huttel. Alongside the hiking routes, the area’s geological features and local history are also worth exploring.
Cultural attractions in the Lahn-Dill-Kreis
The wider Lahn-Dill-Kreis destination offers other distinct cultural attractions. The Lottehaus in Wetzlar commemorates Goethe’s encounter with Charlotte Buff and the summer of 1772. Two rooms on the first floor house a permanent exhibition on the creation and reception of his first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther.”
Technology and industrial history are presented in different ways: the Grube Fortuna visitor mine in Solms-Oberbiel is the only Hessian anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The Villa Grün in Dillenburg displays, in more than 20 rooms, objects and detailed scenes of industrial and craft production in the Dill area; its basement also houses an extensive, media-rich mining exhibition. The Glockenwelt Burg Greifenstein presents almost 100 bells in a tour through a thousand years of German bell history. In Wetzlar, the Optikparcours invites visitors to experiment with and discover optical phenomena, including in a walk-through kaleidoscope.
