Discover Hüttenberg – experience village history and culture
Accommodation in Hüttenberg
In Hüttenberg, insights into the former use of a farmhouse are complemented by a local history museum, a nature trail and a seasonal cultural programme. Each place has a different focus: in Rechtenbach, the emphasis is on historic living and working spaces; in Volpertshausen, on making Handkäse cheese and art, among other things; and in Vollnkirchen, on play and experiment stations.
Cultural history in Rechtenbach and Volpertshausen
Gottfried’s House in Rechtenbach is a farmstead renovated and furnished over the course of three years by members of the Rechtenbach Cultural and Local History Society. Since 1992, it has been furnished as a farmhouse with a utility kitchen, bedroom and living room, reflecting how its residents used it in the past. The rooms provide a tangible setting for the exhibition, showing the different aspects of everyday life and work in a former home.
“At Home with the Gottfrieds” is a special occasion: it is celebrated every year on a Sunday in August. Visitors can experience a day of village life as it was in the past. As no specific date is given, check the event date for the relevant year when planning your visit.
The Hüttenberg Local History Museum in Volpertshausen features a traditional Handkäse cheese workshop. Alongside the living and working spaces at Gottfried’s House, it offers a different perspective on everyday life: the production of Handkäse cheese. Visitors interested in regional cultural history will find a particular focus here on traditional crafts.
Nature experiences and an arts programme
The Eselspfad in Vollnkirchen is a nature trail with play and experiment stations. It offers a different experience from the historic interiors, focusing on stations along a path that invite visitors to play and experiment.
In Volpertshausen, the Atelierkirche adds a seasonal dimension to the cultural programme. From April to October, its arts season features project weeks for freelance artists, exhibitions, concerts, readings, art workshops and open-air cinema. Individual events may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular event, check the dates for the relevant year.
More cultural attractions in the wider Lahn-Dill district destination
The wider Lahn-Dill district destination offers other cultural and visitor attractions, each with its own theme. The Lottehaus in Wetzlar recalls Goethe’s encounter with Charlotte Buff and the summer of 1772. Two rooms on the first floor house a permanent exhibition on the origins and reception of Goethe’s first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther”.
Two attractions in Solms-Oberbiel showcase industrial history: the Grube Fortuna Visitor Mine is the only anchor point in Hesse on the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The Fortuna Field and Mine Railway Museum has 50 historic field and mine locomotives and 100 carriages; trains run according to a timetable. Its collection and train service offer a different perspective from the exhibition on historic mining and manufacturing at Villa Grün in Dillenburg. Spread across more than 20 rooms, the museum presents objects and detailed scenes of industrial and craft production in the Dill region. The basement also houses an elaborate, multimedia mining exhibition.
The Lahn-Dill district also has attractions focused on other subjects: the Optics Trail in Wetzlar invites visitors to experiment with and discover optical phenomena; one of its stations is a walk-in kaleidoscope. The Bell World at Greifenstein Castle presents almost 100 bells in a tour through a thousand years of German bell history. The region’s attractions thus range from literary and industrial history to optical phenomena and bells.
