Solms lies west of Wetzlar in the Lahn-Dill district of central Hesse. The town offers a variety of ways to shape a stay: industrial and local history, mining, a monastery, an observatory and routes through the countryside. Whether you are more interested in historic work, exploring underground or activities on trails and water, these themes can be considered separately when planning.

Industrial History and Solms’s Past

Historical machines are operated at the industrial museum. These include machines that make nails in various sizes, allowing you to watch the production process. The Solms Industrial and Local History Museum focuses on the history of the present-day town and presents it through archaeological finds, pictures, maps and documents. Its local history section is housed in the former administration building of the Heinrich Hollmann & Co. agricultural machinery factory.

Mathildes Lädchen offers a vivid glimpse into everyday life in earlier times: this reconstructed historic general store comes from Burgsolms and introduces visitors to shopping culture before supermarkets became widespread. The Geopunkt offers a different focus. Its natural stone exhibition explains how regional rocks and raw materials are extracted, processed and used. Together, these places show different facets of the town’s history—from the production and use of materials to everyday shopping.

Experience Mining and Observe the Stars

At Grube Fortuna in Solms-Oberbiel, a one-hour underground tour takes you down to the 150-meter level. The tour includes a vertical ride in the mine cage, a trip on the mine railway and demonstrations of original machinery. As tour availability may vary, check the current options before your visit. The BergbauTrail at Grube Fortuna is a marked route through the former open-cast mining area and the mining forest; it offers another way to explore the subject of mining outdoors.

Altenberg Monastery also adds a historical dimension. The monastery complex is over 800 years old, was built around 1170 and is associated with Gertrude of Thuringia. Solms therefore brings together different approaches to history: work with machinery and in mining, regional local history and monastic heritage.

Burgsolms Observatory holds public observation evenings regularly once a month, except during its summer break. No advance registration is required for these evenings. Guided tours are available by prior appointment. If you have a particular date in mind or are planning a guided tour, confirm the relevant dates before your trip.

Hiking Trails, the Lahn and Cycling

The Lahn Valley and the adjoining Hochtaunus Nature Park are options for hiking. The Lahn Hiking Trail, Bergmannsroute and Elisabethpfad also meet in Solms. The Walter-Veit-Weg leads through Mainbach Forest. If you are looking for a marked route related to mining, you can also consider the BergbauTrail at Grube Fortuna as a separate option.

Solms-Schohleck is a starting point for water trips on the Lahn. In Schohleck, three businesses rent kayaks, canoes and inflatable boats. Before travelling, it is worth checking availability and the respective options with the rental businesses. This means that, alongside trails on land, activities on the water are another possible focus for your stay.

The cycling route also provides a specific point of reference: the 245-kilometer Lahn Valley Cycle Route passes through Solms. Along its route, it runs below Altenberg Monastery and past the Solmser Land swimming pool before reaching the Industrial and Local History Museum further on through Solms. These places mark different stops along the cycle route; the total length refers to the Lahn Valley Cycle Route as a whole, not only to the section in Solms.
