A 38-meter-high keep, a moat and a castle wall define Trendelburg Castle. It is also a destination on the German Fairy Tale Route, which runs through the district of Kassel and leads, among other places, to Sleeping Beauty’s Castle at Sababurg and to Trendelburg Castle with its Rapunzel Tower. The German Fairy Tale Route also brings fairy tales to life on open-air stages, as puppet shows or in a museum steeped in history. Castles and fairy-tale motifs therefore offer concrete focal points for planning a trip.

Nature parks with varied landscapes

Large stands of beech trees and numerous volcanic basalt hills shape the landscape of Habichtswald Nature Park. It is considered a destination for nature lovers, hikers, winter sports enthusiasts and anyone seeking relaxation. Reinhardswald Nature Park combines centuries-old pollarded oaks, extensive beech and spruce forests, river valleys and natural streams. It also features limestone grasslands with juniper and orchids. In Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park, deep forests alternate with meadows and fields; colorful mountain meadows and trout streams are also part of its landscape.

These differences help guide your choice: beech trees and basalt take center stage in Habichtswald; in Reinhardswald, it’s ancient pollarded oaks, forests and river valleys; and in Frau-Holle-Land, the mix of forest, meadow and farmland. When planning nature experiences, you can first decide which landscape and activities you want to shape your stay. Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park offers opportunities for gliding and hang gliding, water sports, winter sports, cycling, horseback riding and fishing.

Trails, audio tours and historic traces

The “Hör’ mal!” program offers 15 audio tours for exploring the district of Kassel. They follow fixed routes with stops and viewpoints. The Eco Paths in the district of Kassel have no opening hours and can be explored independently at any time of day; conditions may vary from one trail to another. In Reinhardswald and Habichtswald, Eco Paths offer a chance to trace the area’s history. This includes visiting archaeological sites and discovering castles and palaces. At Dörnberg, there is the Dörnberg Archaeology Eco Path. In Reinhardswald Nature Park, excursions through the landscape are offered as part of the “Nature Experiences” program.

Cycling routes offer another approach to planning. The Kassel-Edersee Cycle Route runs through the districts of Kassel and Waldeck-Frankenberg. The Fulda Cycle Route R1 is designated as a tourist cycling route in the district of Kassel. Check the latest route information before setting off, as conditions may change. Hiking, cycling and audio tours differ not only in how you get around: an audio tour follows a fixed route with stops, while Eco Paths can be explored independently and without opening hours.

Sababurg Animal Park and cultural attractions

Sababurg Animal Park covers 130 hectares and is home to 80 animal species and more than 900 animals. Figures for the number of species and animals may change during ongoing operations. The animal park museum offers insights into the park’s history and daily life, as well as the animal species found there. The animal park is open daily throughout the year; check opening hours before your visit.

A discovery map published jointly by the city and district of Kassel lists 70 cultural attractions and provides addresses, contact details, opening hours and links to their websites. When choosing a hotel in Kassel, it helps to decide on your trip’s focus in advance: castles and fairy-tale sites, a visit to the animal park, nature trails or exploring the landscape all lead to different day plans.
