Discover Naumburg/ Hessen
Accommodation in Naumburg/ Hessen
Naumburg/ Hessen is a historic half-timbered town in a wooded valley. There are several ways to shape your trip: half-timbered architecture and local history, museums, nature watching, and routes for walking and cycling. The combination you choose depends on whether you would rather explore the town itself or set aside time for a tour.
Half-Timbered Houses and the Valley
Naumburg’s town centre lies in an idyllic valley on the slope of a wooded ridge; the valley is designated a landscape conservation area. Naumburg is a half-timbered town with rich half-timbered architecture. St. Crescentius parish church forms the visual centre of the town. The character of the town thus brings together its architectural style and its setting in the valley. For a culturally focused stay, the half-timbered houses and church offer two specific points of interest, while the landscape provides a backdrop for walking and cycling tours.
Museums and the Railway
At the local history museum, you can learn about traditional crafts and try them out yourself: visitors can, for example, plane wood or wield a blacksmith’s hammer. Visits to the local history museum are possible only by prior telephone arrangement, so please arrange yours in advance. The railway museum displays exhibits from the narrow-gauge railway era as well as an extensive model railway collection. It is open on Hessencourrier operating days. Outside those days, you can arrange a visit by telephone through the tourist information office. Check the operating days before your trip if you plan to time your visit around them. The 33.4 km narrow-gauge railway line, known as the Naumburg Railway, is also part of the railway theme: it runs from Kassel to Naumburg, and Naumburg station is its terminus. The two museums have different focuses: the local history museum invites you to try traditional craft techniques, while the railway museum focuses on its collection and the narrow-gauge railway era.
Nature Watching and Cultural History
The Hummelwerkstatt at the edge of Naumburg, also known as the Hummel Zoo, opens each year from May to August. There, you can observe different bumblebee colonies in a special red-light room. If you plan a visit, take the seasonal opening period into account and check the specific visiting dates in advance. The third Weingarten Chapel in Naumburg offers another historical connection; it was consecrated on 29 July 1923. The city of Naumburg initiated the Hessian Pomology Days for the first time in 1998; the event was dedicated to the apple and its many aspects. The Hessian Pomology Days exhibition provides information about the variety of local fruit varieties.
Hiking and Cycling
The Eco Path Archaeology Naumburg is a moderately difficult circular route, 12.94 km long, with a stated duration of 3:30 hours. As route details may be updated, check the information before your tour when planning your time. For cycling, two named routes connect Naumburg with different destinations: the R4 long-distance cycle route links Naumburg with Fritzlar and Wolfhagen; the Hessencourrier Cycle Route links Naumburg with Kassel. The tours can therefore be distinguished by different criteria: the Eco Path lists its difficulty, length and duration, while the cycle routes are described in terms of the places they connect.
