During a stay in Trendelburg, you can choose from several highlights, including the castle, the town’s history and various walking tours. This makes it easy to explore the town, enjoy audio experiences in Gottsbüren and Wülmersen, or discover the landscape along the Holzape as distinct themes.

Castle and sights in Trendelburg

Trendelburg Castle stands on a steep ridge above the Diemel valley, surrounded by a moat and a castle wall. Its keep is 38 metres high. The Rapunzel Tower is one of Trendelburg’s sights along the Diemel Cycle Route.

Town history on two walking tours

The Trendelburg local history society has created the Historical Town Tour. It starts at the town hall and leads through the oldest part of Trendelburg, between the church and the castle, down to the Diemel, past the former Landgrave’s mill and on to the later-developed district near the Diemel bridge.

The Trendelburg Audio Trail is a walking tour with six stops. It also starts at the town hall, follows the outer town wall to the castle and returns to the market square. The two tours therefore share a starting point but follow different routes: the Historical Town Tour descends to the Diemel and continues into the later-developed district, while the Audio Trail loops along the town wall and returns to the market square. If you are choosing between the two, the route is a clear point of difference: the old town and river on one hand, the outer wall, castle and market square on the other.

Audio and landscape trails in the surrounding municipality

The surrounding municipality offers further experiences in Gottsbüren and Wülmersen, including audio and landscape walking tours. The Gottsbüren Audio Walk follows a circular route of around 1.5 kilometres, with nine stops exploring the history of the former place of pilgrimage in the Reinhardswald forest.

The Wülmersen Audio Walk takes you around and through the grounds of the old Wülmersen moated castle and manor house, using headphones and an MP3 player. It tells the story of how Wilmeressen developed into a manor and eventually a moated castle. The two audio experiences differ above all in their subject matter: the history of pilgrimage in Gottsbüren and the development of the manor in Wülmersen.

For a closer look at the landscape, circular hiking route No. 1 follows both banks of the Holzape through a rare, unspoilt stream landscape. From Wülmersen moated castle, the route passes the Wülmersen fish farm on its way to the large Keßpfuhl fishpond, within sight of Gottsbüren. Along the way, beech forests, fir stands and wild, natural riverside meadows alternate. Wülmersen moated castle is located directly on the Diemel Cycle Route and the Diemeltaler Schmetterlings-Steig. The contrast here is between the hiking trail’s stream landscape and the historical stories told on the audio walks; you can decide whether the natural surroundings or local history will be the focus of your explorations.
