Lohfelden: Hiking Trails, Culture and Leisure
Accommodation in Lohfelden
Lohfelden offers a variety of ways to spend your days outdoors or exploring culture and local history. Hiking trails range from short loops to longer routes, and there are also museums, historic sites and recreational areas. When planning, it is worth checking the length and walking time of each trail and the focus of each activity.
Hiking Trails with Different Themes
The approximately 13-kilometre Eco Path “Cultural History” connects historic sites in Lohfelden and spans the period from the Late Bronze Age to the mid-20th century. The estimated walking time is around three hours. You can also hike the route in two stages, using the suggested shortcuts. A longer alternative is the 14-kilometre Baddschensteig: it runs around Lohfelden-Vollmarshausen, following the boundaries of the local district. The starting point is the village lime tree in the centre of Vollmarshausen. In the Middle Ages, court hearings were held at the old Thingstätte, with its distinctive stone table.
The approximately 4.5-kilometre “Following the Trail of Life” Impulse Path is shorter and has ten stations; the entire circular route is accessible. The path along the Lohfelden side of Lindenberg is also accessible and can be used on foot, by bicycle, with a stroller or with a rollator. For a running route, there is a marked five-kilometre loop from the town hall to the “Green Centre” and back. As the condition of the routes should be checked locally, it is advisable to consult local information before setting out.
Other routes offer different highlights: The starting point for the Lohfelden section of ARS NATURA is at Spangenberger Pfad/corner of “Am Alten Teich” in Crumbach, near the church. Lohfelden has also participated in the “Trees of the Year” initiative since 2006. Each tree stands beside a large boulder bearing its name carved in coloured lettering; the trees can be visited along a hiking trail. The marked Grimmsteig route is an access trail to the Grimmsteig. It starts at the Lohfeldener Löwenhof at Bachstraße 36 and runs along Spangenberger Pfad, passing ARS NATURA artworks, to the Herchenbach hiking car park by the Crumbach shelter. The Grimmsteig itself does not pass through Lohfelden.
Explore Local History and Culture
Four information boards are dedicated to the former “Söhrebahn” railway line. They are located at Waldauer Weg/corner of the swimming pool access road, at the Old Ochshausen Station, at Lange Straße/corner of Berliner Straße, and at the Old Vollmarshausen Station. In Crumbach, the audio walk “Crafts, Half-Timbering, Artwork” starts at the old church with its fortified tower and leads through the historic centre. Check that the audio walk is technically available before setting out. The church was built in its present form in 1770; its tower is much older and is thought to have come from an old fortified church dating to the 13th century.
The Chess Museum is on the second floor of the Old Ochshausen School. Its chess collection includes exhibits from various periods, dating back to the 12th century, and from different countries and cultures. Parts of “Chess Picture Worlds” by Bernd Besser, a Lohfelden graphic artist and artist, are also on display there. Check the visiting arrangements before your visit. The town hall also offers a recurring cultural event: two exhibitions with changing themes and artworks are held there each year. Visitors can attend the opening of each exhibition.
Parks and Leisure Activities
“Lohfelden’s Green Centre” lies between Crumbach, Ochshausen and Vollmarshausen. This recreational area includes spaces for relaxing, playing and sports, play areas for young children, a sensory trail, a fitness circuit and the “Dancing Oak” observation platform. Another park is Vorsterpark, which covers around 9,600 square metres. It was created as a public park in 1970/1971 and offers opportunities for relaxation, sports and play. It also features a sculpture inspired by the fairy tale “The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was.” Since 2004, the municipality of Lohfelden has been part of the Märchenlandweg in the district of Kassel.
Lohfelden’s outdoor swimming pool has one- and three-metre diving boards, a wide-wave slide, children’s and baby pools, and a large lawn for play and sunbathing. Other facilities include mini golf and beach volleyball. An 18-hole mini-golf course with a varied layout, run by an active mini-golf club, is located right next to the swimming pool. The outdoor pool and mini golf are seasonal activities; check with the operator before visiting to confirm opening times or whether the course is available.
