Liebenau offers a varied landscape of the Diemel and Warme river valleys, steep limestone cliffs, gentle hills and extensive forests. This gives you a range of options when planning your trip: themed hiking trails, cycling routes, a possible canoe trip and insights into local history. Zwergen outdoor swimming pool adds a seasonal swimming option to the mix.

Hiking amid Limestone Landscapes and Cliffs

The “Muschelkalk in the Diemel Valley” Eco Path connects Lamerden, Körbecke and Ostheim and passes through a landscape shaped by a former subtropical sea of shell-bearing limestone. The Nature Park circular trail also leads to the Rosenberg natural monument and its impressive cliff face. The “Around Langenberg” loop takes in woodland, limestone grassland, sweeping views, fishponds and the Der Weiße Born wetland. Each route offers a different focus: geology, a striking cliff face or a loop through several types of landscape.

Liebenau’s hiking information includes route details, maps, elevation profiles and GPX downloads. Before setting out, check your chosen route and the current trail conditions. The landscape descriptions can help you choose, while the planning materials help you prepare for your hike.

Cycling Routes and a Possible Canoe Trip

The Diemel Cycle Route runs from Usseln via Warburg through Liebenau to Bad Karlshafen on the Weser. It is signposted along its entire length; the Hessian section has green intermediate direction signs. The Warmetal Cycle Route passes through the Liebenau districts of Niedermeiser, Zwergen and Liebenau. The routes have different reference points: the Diemel Cycle Route is described by the towns along its course, while the Warmetal Cycle Route is described by the three districts.

Canoeing on the Diemel is also possible. A stop at the Peace Oak in Lamerden could make a good break. Before your trip, check whether the activity and provider are available for your dates.

Local History Museum and the History of the Town

The local history museum in Liebenau, at Vordere Straße 23, welcomes visitors by appointment. Arrange your visit in advance. The collection covers Liebenau’s local history, traditional regional crafts, agricultural equipment and household items from past centuries. A separate exhibition room is dedicated to the 19th-century linen weavers; it displays weaving patterns and the certificate of an old master weaver. The exhibits can be rearranged. A complete shoemaker’s workshop illustrates one of the oldest trades.

The Pappenheim manor house is also part of the town’s history: it is considered to be the successor to a moated castle. Together with the craft and everyday items in the local history museum, it provides another historical point of interest, though the two places do not tell the same story.

Zwergen Outdoor Swimming Pool and a Regional Flavor

Zwergen outdoor swimming pool has a lap pool, a non-swimmer pool and a baby pool. Facilities also include a beach volleyball court and a table tennis table, with a playground right next door. For a break, there is a roughly 3,000-square-metre sunbathing lawn bordered by trees. The pool is heated using a solar-powered absorber system. As swimming is seasonal and facilities may change, check the current visitor information in advance.

Another local connection to the landscape can be found on the limestone grassland slopes along the Diemel: juniper berries from the area are said to be an ingredient in “Diemel Gin.”
