Zierenberg is a small town in the Habichtswald Nature Park officially recognized as a resort. It lies in the Warme Valley between the 578-meter-high Dörnberg to the east and the 601-meter-high Bärenberg to the west; Kassel is about 20 kilometers away. Historic buildings in the town tell the story of different eras, while trails in the surrounding area lead to basalt formations and viewpoints. You can combine your stay with cultural history or a hike.

Half-timbered houses and architectural history in Zierenberg

The historic town hall was built in 1450 by master builder Henrich Brant and is considered the oldest surviving half-timbered town hall in Hesse. Another early building is the Steinhaus, also known as the Steinkammer, Steinscheune or Steinwerk. It is considered the oldest house in Zierenberg and was built around 1300. The town hall and the Steinhaus thus represent different stages in the town’s architectural history.

The Protestant town church also combines distinctive architecture with historic details. Construction began in 1293 under Landgrave Henry I in the Gothic style; the west tower is 45 meters high. The church contains wall paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries. They were uncovered again in 1934 and subsequently painstakingly restored from 1958 to 1961 and from 1997 to 2006. A guided tour of the church can be booked and covers its architectural history and wall paintings. You can also climb the tower and visit the tower keeper’s room, which looks out over the Dörnberg massif and the Warme Valley.

Hiking routes of varying lengths

The Habichtswaldsteig Zierenberg H2 extra trail is a 16.5-kilometer loop. You can start at any point along the route; the recommended starting point is the information hut at the Dörnberg hiking car park in 34289 Zierenberg. Along the way, the trail passes a large basalt scree field known as the “Blue Stones.” It also leads to the three distinctive basalt rocks of the Helfensteine. From there, views extend across Zierenberg to the Waldecker Land and as far as the Reinhardswald and Kassel.

The Alpenpfad offers a shorter loop: it is five kilometers long, is considered easy and has no steep inclines. The route passes through open scrubland and shady stands of spruce and pine, with wide-ranging, varied views of the surrounding area. The stated walking time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes; check the route details before setting out. At 16.5 kilometers, the H2 loop is considerably longer than the Alpenpfad, so the two routes differ in the distance covered.

Dörnberg, natural landscape and viewpoints

In the Dörnberg Nature Reserve, formations of Bunter sandstone, Muschelkalk limestone and Tertiary rock shape the landscape. Botanically noteworthy dry grassland communities have developed on the shallow, stony soils. The Habichtswald Nature Park Center, opened in August 2009 in a former youth center, provides information about the nature park’s natural, historical and geological features, as well as leisure and event offerings.

Another viewpoint is the tower atop the 461-meter-high Großer Schreckenberg above Zierenberg. The medieval watchtower was rebuilt in 1911 after falling into disrepair and renovated in 1991. From its observation platform, you can see far across Zierenberg in the Warme Valley. Together with the viewpoints at the Helfensteine, it offers different perspectives on the town and its surrounding landscape.
