If you’re looking for a hotel in Rothenberg, a clear theme for the destination can make it easier to decide where to stay. Water is a recurring theme here: it shapes a geopark trail as well as the history of the local water supply. Historical references also reach back to the Middle Ages, while regional forest trails and a cross-country ski trail that depends on snow conditions offer other perspectives. This lets you explore the area through its cultural and landscape themes.

Water Trail and the History of the Water Supply

The Rothenberg Geopark Trail puts water at its heart. Ten information panels explain the importance of water to people’s lives in Rothenberg and the Finkenbach Valley, as well as the development of the water supply. The panels trace the subject from water’s role in everyday life to the question of how the supply developed.

From 1902 until the 1960s, the Rothenberg waterworks first supplied Rothenberg with water and later also served Ober-Hainbrunn and KortelshĂĽtte. This sequence shows how its role developed over time and across the area: Rothenberg was supplied first, followed by the two other places. The water came from a spring in the Gammelsbach Valley, 40 metres above the pumping station. The facility pumped it over a difference in elevation of 280 metres to the Rothenberg reservoir, without using external energy.

The two elevation figures describe different relationships: the 40 metres refer to the spring’s position above the pumping station; the 280 metres describe the difference in elevation over which water was pumped to the reservoir. This gives an idea of the scale of the historic pumping operation without conflating the two figures.

At the nature park car park on state road L3410 between Rothenberg and Rothenberg-KortelshĂĽtte, the restored, working water engine from the 1902 water supply system is on display in an exhibition building. It complements the information about the route water travelled and the places supplied with a tangible technical exhibit.

History and Trails in the Region

An earlier historical reference dates to 1353, when Emperor Charles IV granted Rothenberg as an imperial fief to the knight Engelhard I of Hirschhorn and his heirs. This grant is a distinct point of reference alongside the later history of the water supply, offering an earlier glimpse into Rothenberg’s past. The date, ruler and recipient are all clearly identified.

In Oberzent, the Odenwald-Neckar-Runde Rothenberg/Hirschhorn and the Geo-Pfad Rothenberg, themed around water, are among the certified circular hiking trails. In the area around Rothenberg, quiet forest trails connect the scenic heights of Oberzent-KortelshĂĽtte with Hirschhorn Castle on the Neckar. Views of the Neckar Valley sometimes open up along the way. Views and trail conditions vary by season, so bear this in mind when planning your walks.

Cross-Country Skiing on the Plateau

The Rothenberg cross-country ski trail is of medium length and flat, running across fields on Rothenberg’s scenic high plateau. Whether it can be used depends on snow conditions, so check the latest conditions before planning your trip. The trail offers a different perspective on the area from the themed routes: here, the flat terrain, fields and winter conditions are what matter.
