Bad König: Town Centre, Spa Park and How to Get There
Bad König is the only spa town in the Odenwald district; its regional designation may change if its recognition status changes. For orientation, the spa park, historic town centre and Georg-Vetter-Weg each offer a different focus. You can plan your stay according to whether you are interested in parkland, architectural history or a route leading out of town.
Bad König is accessible by the Odenwald Railway. The walk from the station to Schloßplatz is about 800 metres. Check current train connections before travelling. Schloßplatz is also a point of reference for the town’s historic buildings.
Spa Park: Grounds and Highlights
Bad König Spa Park has two lakes. Its grounds include a mini-golf course, a water playground, a balance trail and a Kneipp footbath. There is also a planet trail, sundials and water fountains, as well as facilities for outdoor chess and boules. The park thus offers a range of activities for play, exercise and leisure, alongside features to explore by looking around.
At the Small Lake, you’ll find an 18-hole mini-golf course, outdoor chess, a boules court and a Kneipp facility. The sundials add a distinctive feature: three were installed near the tennis courts in 1987. The eastern dial shows Central European Time by means of its shadow; the middle one, a world sundial, shows four times simultaneously. The two displays differ in that one indicates CET while the other shows several times side by side.
The paths around the lakes are lit, and you can walk or jog there until 10 pm. Lighting and opening times may change. If you plan an evening walk, check the current conditions before your visit.
Historic Town Centre and Culture
The historic town centre includes the castles, the Lustgarten, the castle church, the Rentmeisterei and the open-air theatre. The Old Castle dates back to 1559. Formerly the residence of the Counts of Erbach-Schönberg, it stands on elevated ground at the southern end of Schloßplatz. Its broad, multi-bay façade and its size define the square. Its historic function and striking façade offer different starting points for exploring the castle and its impact on the square.
Two exhibition rooms of the local history museum are located on the ground floor of the Old Castle. If you’d like to visit the museum, check access arrangements in advance. The open-air theatre is also in the historic town centre: it has been there since 1985 and hosts outdoor events. If a performance is important to your trip, check the event schedule in advance.
Georg-Vetter-Weg and Guided Town Tour
The Georg-Vetter-Weg starts right by the Georg Vetter Museum and leads out of town between gardens and meadows to the cemetery. The centuries-old cemetery chapel stands there; Georg Vetter often used it as a subject for his drawings. The route thus leads from the named museum to a place associated with a recurring subject in the artist’s work. If you’re including it in your plans, ask locally about the path conditions.
A leisurely guided town tour is also offered in Bad König. It accommodates people with walking difficulties and those using a rollator, wheelchair or walking stick; everyone else is welcome too. Check the practical arrangements and accessibility details with the guide.
