Breuberg brings together several themes that offer different focal points when choosing a destination: Neustadt’s town history, Breuberg Castle, and connections to nature and routes across the districts. Local highlights range from the history of the market in Neustadt to the B3 circular route, which connects all five districts.

Neustadt: Town History and Market

Neustadt, now a district of Breuberg, developed from the 14th century onward from a settlement for the castle lords’ servants into a fortified market town and rural town with its own jurisdiction. Emperor Charles IV granted Neustadt town rights in 1378. When Breuberg was founded in 1971, Neustadt transferred these rights to Breuberg. Together, these dates mark a transition from a settlement to a fortified market town and rural town, followed later by the transfer of town rights when Breuberg was founded.

Not far from the market square stands the Rodenstein Manor, a distinctive half-timbered house dating from 1569. Below the house is a wooden market cross bearing symbols of market peace and market jurisdiction. Neustadt’s historic character is thus shaped both by the dated half-timbered house and by a market cross whose symbols are associated with market peace and market jurisdiction.

Breuberg Castle and Architectural Heritage

Breuberg Castle is one of Germany’s largest and best-preserved castle complexes. The castle houses a youth hostel, a castle tavern and the Breuberg Museum. The castle complex provides a distinct focus from Neustadt’s market history: here, the castle takes centre stage, while in Neustadt, town rights, the market and the half-timbered house form the historical setting.

Landscape, Cycling Routes and Art

There are also specific attractions beyond the area’s historic sites. Breuberg’s BAUMreich is a local recreation area with far-reaching views and a practical example of biodiversity in Breuberg. The Breuberg floodplain lies directly beside the Mümling and the 3-Länder Cycle Route towards Mömlingen. This makes the floodplain distinct from BAUMreich, with its river and cycling route contrasting with the views and biodiversity that characterise BAUMreich.

The official B3 circular route connects all five of Breuberg’s districts. The permanent Bb1 mountain bike trail was designated in 2012 in the forested area between Breuberg, Höchst and Groß-Umstadt. Following its positive reception, another trail, Bb2, opened in Breuberg shortly afterwards. Check local information on current route conditions before setting out.

In the wider Odenwald destination, the 16-kilometre 2-Burgen Cycle Route connects two castle complexes. The routes have different focal points: the B3 circular route connects Breuberg’s five districts, while the 2-Burgen Cycle Route is distinguished by its length and the connection between two castle complexes.

A recurring cultural highlight is the “Stone & Wood” art symposium, held every two years in the Breuberg floodplain. If you want to plan your trip around the symposium, check the dates for the relevant edition.
