Templin combines a medieval fortification and historic buildings with cultural offerings and a small bathing area by the town lake. For a trip focused on the town’s history, you can stroll along the fortifications or take an archaeological tour of the town with information panels. If you are looking for a hotel in Templin, you can shape your visit around these specific aspects of the town: architectural history, cultural events or time by the water.

Medieval Fortifications and Town Centre

The medieval fieldstone wall encloses Templin’s medieval town centre. It is 1,735 metres long and up to seven metres high. You can stroll along the restored Templin fortifications, which include three Gothic brick gates, two towers and 47 Wiekhäuser (fortified houses built into the wall). Of the three gates, the Prenzlauer Tor is Templin’s newest and most complete brick gate. The historic Prenzlauer Tor brings Templin’s more than 750-year history to life in the museum.

Brick Gothic, Half-Timbering and Architectural History

The small St. George’s Chapel dates from the 14th century and was built in the Brick Gothic style. Inside is a wooden sculpture from the 16th century depicting the patron saint George on horseback, in full armour and fighting the dragon. The building and the artwork therefore date from different centuries.

Rühlstraße is lined with lovingly restored half-timbered houses dating from around 1740, forming a continuous block-front development. The houses create a unified streetscape. St. Mary Magdalene Church reflects a different chapter in the town’s architectural history: after the fire of 1735, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style on the foundations of its Gothic predecessor.

Town Tours, Culture and the Town Lake

The Archaeological Town Tour passes through the historic old town, including the market square and church square, and continues to the city wall. Ten information panels provide background on the finds at each location. This self-guided route differs from the town walks offered on Tuesdays and Saturdays, which share both interesting facts and anecdotes about Templin. If you plan to join a town walk, check the specific date before your trip.

The Multicultural Centre offers a year-round programme of cinema, theatre, cabaret, readings, exhibitions and concerts. This extends the cultural offering beyond the historic buildings and routes. A small bathing area lies right by the lakeside path on Templin Town Lake, below the Weinberg. It offers another way to spend time by the water.
