Schönfeld Church: Stone Construction and Rededication
Schönfeld Church is a substantial stone building dating from the 13th century. Its stepped design is evident in the broad west tower, the narrower nave, the set-back chancel and the apse. The changing widths divide the building from the tower to the chancel; the apse completes the sequence. The church interior was completely renovated. During the work, remnants of frescoes were discovered in the altar area and partially uncovered. The church was rededicated during a service on September 27, 1992. The building’s 13th-century origins and a precisely dated event in 1992 thus provide two points of reference.
Traces from Several Centuries
Schönfeld’s settlement history dates back to the colonization period around 1200. In 1375, the land register recorded freeholds held by Lüdicke von der Berge and Kuno Schwanebeke. In 1541 and 1608, the village, two manor estates, the fishery and the fields were associated with the Berg family. By the end of the Thirty Years’ War, much of Schönfeld was deserted and devastated. Carl Büchsel was born in Schönfeld in 1803. Taken together, these historical reference points span the settlement period around 1200, property and economic connections, and a biographical date in 1803.
Megalithic Tomb, Meadows and Swimming Pool
The area around the megalithic tomb below Galgenberg is considered a protected natural monument. Check its protection status before visiting the site. Walks through the surrounding meadows and fields are considered rewarding at any time of year. One route leads to an elk and reindeer farm near Kleptow.
Klockow swimming pool is located in the municipality of Schönfeld. It has separate areas for swimmers and non-swimmers, a 3-metre diving tower, sunbathing lawns and a separate paddling pool. Since facilities can change, check the swimming pool details before your visit. The walks are in the surrounding countryside, while the swimming pool is in the municipality of Schönfeld; this lets you compare different options for your trip.
