Angermünde: Old Town, Museum and Wildlife Park
Accommodation in Angermünde
Angermünde combines a listed old town with museum history, historic buildings and a wildlife park. If you are looking for a hotel in Angermünde, it helps to first decide what interests you during your stay: Should the city’s history take centre stage, are you interested in the collections and exhibitions, or would you like to include the wildlife park? The different attractions give your choice a clear thematic focus.
Old Town, Church and Historic Buildings
Angermünde has a listed historic old town. Among its prominent buildings is St. Mary’s Church in Angermünde, completed around 1250 as the town’s parish church and still largely preserved in its original condition. The Wagner organ, dating from 1742 to 1744, is also preserved in the church. It has 30 stops and around 2,000 sounding pipes. The historic structure of the Powder Tower can be understood through its specific dimensions: it is 21 metres high and extends 3.50 metres below ground.
The Mündesee promenade also brings together contemporary design and older history. It was created where ramparts once stood to repel attackers. The promenade features stone sculptures made from massive glacial granite boulders weighing several hundredweight. They were created in connection with the hard-stone symposia held in Angermünde from 1997 onwards. A guided tour through Angermünde’s historic town centre lasts 1.5 hours and passes through small, narrow lanes alongside a historic town wall.
Museum and Stories of Angermünde
The Angermünde Museum has an extensive archaeological collection. It includes ceramic vessels dating from the Stone Age through to the Middle Ages. The permanent exhibition “History and Stories” presents discoveries in Angermünde as well as stories associated with Ehm Welk. The museum’s themes therefore bring together archaeological finds and their broad time span with stories connected to Ehm Welk.
Walking Tour or Wildlife Park
In addition to the guided tour, there is a digital audio guide for exploring the town. It takes you on a circular route of approximately 2.5 kilometres to various sights and places steeped in history. The two options can be compared using different planning details: the guided tour has a stated duration of 1.5 hours, while the audio guide gives the approximate length of the route. You can then decide whether a time estimate or the route length is more useful for planning your day.
Angermünde Wildlife Park covers seven hectares and is home to around 250 animals from 45 species from every continent. Its attractions include petting enclosures with ponies, goats and guinea pigs, as well as an adventure playground. The zoo school offers themed guided tours, animal safaris, project days and hiking days. This makes the wildlife park a clearly different focus for a trip from the historic buildings and museum: here, the animals and the zoo school’s activities take centre stage.
Planning Within the Wider Region
There is Park & Ride parking at Angermünde railway station for the Monastery Tour. In the wider travel destination of the Uckermark, the Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park lies amid the water-rich, gently rolling landscape. It encompasses many clear-water lakes, kettle holes and marshes. The nature park has more than 150 kilometres of water trails and over 600 kilometres of signposted hiking trails. If you are planning your trip around the wider Uckermark region, you can look beyond Angermünde’s urban attractions to include the nature park and its trails.
