Oder-Welse: Landscapes, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Oder-Welse
It stretches from the Welsebruch in the north across terminal moraines dotted with numerous lakes to the Oder. Alongside this broad landscape setting are protected areas, cultural venues in Pinnow and individual viewpoints. Whether you are planning your trip around nature, history or a view, these different highlights can help you get an initial sense of what your stay has to offer.
Landscape and protected areas
The Oder-Welse administrative area includes part of the Lower Oder Valley National Park. In addition, the “Lower Oder Valley National Park Region” landscape protection area in Uckermark District covers all or part of the municipalities of Pinnow and Schöneberg. The names are similar, but refer to different types of protected area: one is a national park, while the other is a landscape protection area. Their geographical scope also differs: the national park is mentioned in connection with the administrative area, while the landscape protection area covers all or part of the municipalities of Pinnow and Schöneberg. For orientation, it is helpful to distinguish between these names and the areas they refer to.
Cultural venues in Pinnow
Two cultural venues in Pinnow offer different experiences. A distillery houses the Root Museum, featuring root-art works by an artist. A farming museum was set up in a granary under the motto “Nature and History.” The themes differ, as do the buildings: root art is housed in a distillery, while the farming museum is in a granary. If you would like to visit either museum, check visiting arrangements in advance.
Views over the Lower Oder Valley
The ascent to the Richterberg viewpoint in StĂĽtzkow was renovated in 2024; an archived notice from that year described the excellent view from there over the floodplain landscape of the Lower Oder Valley. This viewpoint adds a landscape perspective to the cultural venues. If you plan to visit, check the current access and condition in advance.
Milmersdorf as a wider travel context
The wider travel destination of Milmersdorf offers additional nature and swimming opportunities. Milmersdorf lies within the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve and along a moraine trail. On field and hiking trails in Milmersdorf, visitors can observe native wild species from the nearby forests of the Schorfheide. The biosphere reserve and the moraine trail represent two different nature-related attractions in Milmersdorf.
Lake Kölpinsee in the municipality of Milmersdorf can be reached via hiking trails and offers opportunities for bathing, swimming and relaxing. A bathing area on Lake Lübbesee is located in Petersdorf, an inhabited part of the municipality of Milmersdorf. It has a jetty, a small bathing access, a large sunbathing lawn and a car park. These facilities may change; check the current amenities before your visit. The Milmersdorf area therefore offers a range of different travel interests: wildlife watching, activities at Lake Kölpinsee and a visit to the Petersdorf bathing area.
Together, these details about places and landscapes help you choose what to focus on during your stay.
