Discover Nordwestuckermark
Accommodation in Nordwestuckermark
Nordwestuckermark offers travellers a range of things to explore: historic buildings, walking and cycling routes, a lake, art and local crafts. In FĂĽrstenwerder, several buildings and a promenade path take centre stage; in Naugarten, the lake, signposted trails and a gallery are among the other attractions.
Historic buildings in FĂĽrstenwerder and Wittstock
A fieldstone wall around 1,300 metres long encloses the historic centre of FĂĽrstenwerder. The town gates, Berliner Tor and Woldegker Tor, have pointed-arch passageways and are among the oldest of their kind in northern Germany. The church in FĂĽrstenwerder is also built of fieldstone and dates from the mid-13th century. The wall, gates and church display different architectural features: the enclosure of the historic centre, the shape of the gate openings and the building material used for the church.
Between Wittstock and Rittgarten, at the edge of the path to Augustfelde, stand the ruins of Wüsten Kirche Wittstock. The rectangular fieldstone building, with a transversely rectangular west tower, dates from the 13th century. The lower part of the tower and sections of the nave’s outer walls have survived. Fürstenwerder’s church is a building from the mid-13th century; in Wittstock, the surviving parts of the ruins shape the historic impression. Those interested in fieldstone buildings can thus discover two different perspectives on 13th-century churches.
Trails, a lake and outdoor activities
In Naugarten, signposted, unpaved cycling and hiking trails invite visitors to enjoy short walks and longer excursions, including guided tours to notable sites. One specific hiking route is the Uckermärkischer Rundweg: it connects Angermünde, Templin and Prenzlau, and runs from Boitzenburg through Naugarten and onwards towards Gollmitz. The options range from short walks to a route linking several named places.
The municipally owned lake near Naugarten covers around 33 hectares and invites visitors to swim and fish. Walking all the way around it offers an impressive experience of nature. Naugarten also has a bicycle and a boat rental service. Check current local information about the availability of these rentals before your visit. Swimming and fishing in the lake, walking around it and the rental services offer different ways to spend time outdoors.
For cycling trips, the 55-kilometre “Spur der Steine” (“Trail of Stones”) route runs mostly along a former railway embankment through the Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park. It leads from Templin via Warthe and Boitzenburg to Fürstenwerder. The promenade path in Fürstenwerder, laid out in 1900, follows a different route: lined with old chestnut trees, it circles the town wall. Together, these offer a route through several places and a path around the Fürstenwerder town wall.
Art, crafts and culture
At Hof Kokurin in Naugarten, a gallery features constantly changing paintings, wooden sculptures and small works of art. The FĂĽrstenwerder Local History Museum focuses mainly on traditional village crafts. The two venues offer different cultural experiences: one showcases changing works of painting, sculpture and small-scale art, while the other focuses on local crafts.
Schlosskirche Kröchlendorff serves another cultural purpose: it is the community’s cultural and event centre.
