Hauts-De-Seine: Art, Museums and Expansive Parks
Accommodation in Hauts-De-Seine
In the Hauts-De-Seine department, visitor attractions range from Rodin’s home, studio and park to ceramic art and expansive parks. This offers different reasons to stay: you can focus on collections and crafts, or set aside time for landscaped grounds and walking paths. When choosing a hotel location, it helps to first decide what you want to prioritize on your trip.
Rodin’s world in Meudon
The Musée Rodin Meudon brings together a house, studio and park for a visitor experience centered on Rodin’s sculptures and world. In the Galerie des plâtres, the museum displays sculptures at successive stages. This makes steps in Rodin’s creative process easier to follow. The Villa des Brillants was Rodin’s home during the last 20 years of his life. His tomb is in the park, topped by the sculpture “The Thinker”; the tomb faces the Seine Valley. The Musée Rodin Meudon also runs arts and cultural education projects for young people of all ages and backgrounds.
Ceramics and the art of collecting
In Sèvres, ceramic production meets its history. Sèvres – Cité de la Céramique produces artistic ceramics, reissues of historical models, and contemporary works using traditional techniques. The Musée de la Céramique in Sèvres traces the history of ceramics from around the world. The focus thus extends from the making of individual works to the development of the material across different cultures.
The Musée départemental de Sceaux showcases French taste through paintings, graphic art, furniture and objets d’art. At the Musée du Domaine départemental de Sceaux, the program includes guided tours, workshops, classes and themed conferences; dates may vary. Visitors can use boats, known as barques, on the Grand Canal, weather and operating conditions permitting. Museum collections, educational programs and outdoor activities give a visit to Sceaux several cultural and practical focal points.
Parks on different scales
The parks already differ in size: the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud covers 460 hectares and features gardens, fountains and sculptures. The Domaine national de Saint-Cloud has been listed as a historic monument since November 9, 1994. The Domaine départemental de Sceaux spans 152 hectares and includes vistas associated with Le Nôtre. The Parc départemental des Chanteraines offers 82 hectares of lawns, valleys and wooded areas. Their different sizes and landscape features make it possible to compare the parks concretely without reducing them to the same character.
Outdoor art adds another distinctive element. The Parc départemental Gauthier Mougin features a sculpture trail with around twenty works. The Parc nautique départemental de l’Île de Monsieur is an ecological park with promenades and recreational areas; rare plants are also preserved there. Park themes thus range from formal gardens and sculptures to walking paths and the protection of special plants.
Walking and cycling routes
Hauts-De-Seine offers 29 walking loops and cycling routes. Twelve cycling tours are rated by difficulty and generally cover 12 to 18 kilometers. For longer distances, La Seine à vélo connects Paris, Rouen, Le Havre and Deauville along more than 400 kilometers of cycling route. The Véloscénie follows a 450-kilometer cycling route from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel. These routes differ in length and the destinations they connect. Vélib’ métropole offers conventional and electric bikes, as well as 24-hour or three-day pass options; check which options are currently available before planning.
