Fontenay-Aux-Roses is shaped by its rose-growing and local history, parks, the natural area at the Site du Panorama and a cultural programme. When planning your stay, you can consider whether you are most interested in cultural events, green spaces or the area’s special rose-growing tradition.

Parks, Paths and Nature

The Coulée verte is a walking and cycling promenade connecting Paris with Massy. Along the promenade are a rugby pitch, an archery range and a publicly accessible outdoor street-workout area for strength training. These facilities offer different activities: exercising outdoors, archery and rugby are all part of the route, alongside walking and cycling along the promenade.

Parc Sainte-Barbe combines a long history with a more recent redesign. Its origins date back at least to the 18th century. In 2025, the park underwent a major redesign: the soil was unsealed and planted swales were created. Its historical development and completed renovation thus stand side by side, without reducing one to the other’s time frame.

Parc Laboissière also has a history reflected in its name and origins. It was created on the former grounds of Château Laboissière, built in the 17th century. Parc Laboissière opened to the public in 2019. The park is also home to the sculpture “Jonas et la baleine” by Adomas Samogitas. The château’s history and the sculpture offer two distinct cultural points of interest.

At the Site du Panorama, visitors can take walks and learn about biodiversity conservation while sensitive habitats are preserved. The diverse natural environment includes forests, meadows and transitional zones, and is connected to regional natural habitat networks. There is also a remarkable view across the valley. Nature, biodiversity and the view each contribute to this part of the offering in different ways.

Rose-Growing Tradition and Local History

Rose growing in Fontenay-Aux-Roses has been documented since 1521. Later, the deep-red-flowering Bengal rose was also cultivated there. The Roseraie continues the rose theme with a collection of its own: it contains more than 800 rose bushes representing around 50 varieties. The fragrant, large-flowered pinkish-white rose “Ville de Fontenay-aux-Roses” grows there. The approximate number of varieties and the large number of rose bushes give an idea of the collection’s scale; the named rose adds a distinctive example.

Winegrowing is also part of the area’s earlier history. From the Middle Ages until the 16th century, it was the village’s main activity. Fontenay-Aux-Roses’s history, then, is not told through roses alone: historic winegrowing and the later documented rose-growing tradition are two distinct chapters. Winegrowing should be understood as a historical activity.

Cultural Events and Venues

The Théâtre des Sources offers a multidisciplinary programme featuring theatre, music, comedy, dance, cabaret evenings and events for young audiences. The programme changes each season. The flexible-use auditorium has 750 seats. The current season is listed as “hors-les-murs”; therefore, check the venue for each performance before travelling. This keeps the auditorium’s capacity and the note about the current performance venue clearly distinct.

Espace Rosa Bonheur also brings together several types of events: its programme from September 2026 to summer 2027 includes exhibitions, opening receptions, gatherings and workshops. Check the specific dates before travelling. For a stay focused on nature and rose-growing history, the parks, the Roseraie and the Site du Panorama offer different themes to weigh up when planning your trip.
