When looking for a hotel in Montrouge, you can plan your trip around specific interests: Art Deco and architectural history, cultural events or green spaces. The bell tower combines Art Deco architecture with event, conference and exhibition spaces; the church, town hall and cemetery add to the area’s heritage. Parc Jean-Loup Metton offers a distinct focus on green spaces and activities.

Art Deco and culture at the bell tower

The Beffroi de Montrouge is a 46-metre-high Art Deco building with event, conference and exhibition spaces. One of its defining features is the 40-metre-long limestone frieze. Louis Sajous carved its 27 panels directly into the stone; they depict local agricultural and industrial life, modern inventions and sport. The carillon plays well-known melodies several times a day at set times. If you want to include it in your day’s plans, check the playing times in advance.

Architectural history and design

Église Saint-Jacques le Majeur has been protected as a historic monument since 2006. Éric Bagge designed it in reinforced concrete; its structural frame is made of reinforced concrete, and it also has hinged portals. Compared with the bell tower, the focus here shifts from Art Deco and the limestone frieze to the structure and portal design.

Hôtel de Ville de Montrouge was built between 1880 and 1883. The town hall, along with its fireplaces, sculptures and paintings, is included in the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage. Together, the three buildings illustrate different aspects of the area’s heritage: Art Deco, a specific construction method, and an inventoried town hall with its artistic features.

Green spaces, history and nature

Cimetière de Montrouge is the only Parisian cemetery with a crypt. Attributed to Henri Decaux, it is decorated with bas-reliefs by Louis Sajous and Marcel Renard and can be visited. If you plan to visit the crypt, check the visiting arrangements in advance. Its tree-lined paths tell the stories of anonymous residents as well as well-known figures. There are also small meadow areas with multicoloured flowers, chosen for their resilience and appeal to pollinating insects.

Parc Jean-Loup Metton is Montrouge’s largest park; it offers at least one hectare of green space and a range of activities. Its scale therefore differs from the small meadow areas at Cimetière de Montrouge.

Plan for cultural events

Médiathèque de Montrouge hosts cultural events throughout the year, including exhibitions, discovery concerts, readings, debates and storytelling events. Activities and dates may change, so check in advance what is on during your stay.

Since 1955, the Salon de Montrouge has offered the public the chance to discover a new generation of contemporary artists through selected works displayed at the bell tower. If you want to attend a specific edition, check its dates.
